2021 Regional Excellence Award winners

Last week the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning hosted its first State of the Region event and awarded 2021 Regional Excellence Awards.

The Village of Bedford Park was honored with the "Partners for Progress" award for its Connect2work program, a pilot sponsored by Cook County Government and the RTA that helps connect people to jobs using public transit.

The Connect2Work mobile app helps users find the fastest available public transit route, ride a free shuttle during rush hour, and get discounted rates for late-night and last-mile rides. The program incentivizes users to choose transit over driving, which reduces congestion and shortens travel times. More than 2,700 rides have been booked through Connect2 Work since it launched in December 2020.

The RTA is proud of this recognition and committed to exploring innovative solutions to transportation challenges in the Chicago region. Other partners include Uber, Via Transportation, Moovit, Antero Group LLC, and Shared-Use Mobility Center. https://www.cmap.illinois.gov/regional-excellence-awards/2021-winners

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning's Regional Excellence Awards program offers a unique opportunity for municipal leaders, nonprofits, transit agencies, and advocates to have their exceptional work recognized by peers from across northeastern Illinois. Meet the 2021 winners.

Guest blogger Edith Makra says public transit is vital for climate change adaptation - Connections

"Weather extremes caused by climate change are the greatest threat to our transit system. Our systems need to be resilient, and we don’t have the luxury of time to plan for adaptation. We’ve already seen flooding and the extreme cold of the polar vortex stress our transit system in recent years. This year we’ve seen transit systems buckle under flash floods in New York and China. Not only do we need to build in redundancy and contingencies in plans and operations, we need to adapt our transit infrastructure to withstand new climate predictions."

Guest blogger Oboi Reed calls on the transit system to reckon with racial equity and mobility justice - Connections

The latest entry in Making a Plan, a guest blog series about the future of public transit in Northeastern Illinois features Oboi Reed of Equiticity and the Transportation Equity Network.

"Our transit system is in dire need of operationalizing a comprehensive commitment to racial equity and mobility justice. It is a critical lifeline for Black and Brown people, especially living on the South and West sides of Chicago, helping us reach important destinations, such as job centers, healthcare, schools, grocery stores, recreation, and civic engagement."

RTA Board weighs in on priorities as strategic planning begins - Connections

The Regional Transportation Authority is beginning its next five-year regional transit strategic plan during a time of dynamic social and economic transformation. Regions all over the world are experiencing an evolution in personal mobility and work. The Chicago region’s transportation system must adapt and, ideally, anticipate change.

In August, the process began with a workshop with the RTA Board of Directors where staff engaged members representing the city of Chicago and the six counties of Northeastern Illinois served by the RTA by asking them to prioritize opportunities and challenges in five broad areas: Opportunities for Impact, Transit System Adaptation, Funding Sustainability, Equity, and Engagement. Invest In Transit

Northeastern Illinois and the City of Chicago depend on safe, reliable trains and buses to get two million riders where they need to go every day. The 2018-2023 Regional Transit Strategic Plan, Invest in Transit, is the region’s case for pursuing dependable funding streams that will enable the Transit Agencies to provide this vital service well into the future. Unfortunately, capital funding has been limited and unpredictable over the past ten years. A capital program of $2 to $3 billion every year would allow the region to make significant improvements.
