Our public service responsibilities, however, are not limited to setting property values. In addition to working with other government agencies to stimulate economic development, job creation and the construction of affordable housing, we also seek to help county residents better understand the assessment process and take advantage of money-saving exemptions the office provides.

Meet Kimberly D. Young, Executive Assistant at the Cook County Assessor's Office. She shares with us what Black heritage means to her:
"I define Black Heritage as people of melanin pigmentation descending from a royal ancestry of ambassadors, innovators and influencers who were unafraid to break boundaries as well as pave the way for future African American descendants to freely express their creativity. It’s a celebration for my forefathers and mothers and their lack of resistance towards systemic barriers which have shaped the trajectory of our future descendants. I also define Black Heritage as a declaration of being proud of my unique characteristics and features despite what is considered to be “societal norms,” as well as the unapologetic strength and courage I possess when persevering through challenges." Meet Kelwin Harris, Director of Outreach at the Cook County Assessor's Office. He shares what Black History Month means to him.
"Black History Month is a time to renew our sense of purpose in the fight for racial equity in Chicago and Cook County. It’s a time to recalibrate our commitment to addressing systems, policies, and practices that benefit some at the expense of others. Growing up in Chicago, I know the “tale of two cities” all too well and the pain points experienced in some communities. This month is a time to ask ourselves, Can South Michigan Ave. look like North Michigan Ave? This month is a time to have uncomfortable conversations until they’re no longer uncomfortable. This month is a time to be dissatisfied until all residents can share in a healthy and meaningful quality of life and then take this energy with us throughout the year. I am happy to be working with committed people in Cook County government to repair the property tax system and bring more fairness to communities that have been harmed. I look forward to continuing to work together to make these goals attainable for all." Cook County Government #BlackHistoryMonth

New Cook County property assessments continue to shift tax burden from homeowners to businesses in south suburbs

“My principle is don’t inject my politics or preferences,” Kaegi said. “Be a mirror to the market, because that’s how we’re accountable.”

“The way I can do my job faithfully is to use market values to assess everyone, and that may be new, but that’s how it was always supposed to be done,” he said.
