EverThrive Illinois has relaunched our Associate Board, and we want to introduce you to one of our members, Maggie Butler! Maggie is a social scientist and researcher studying maternal and child health and health equity in populations across Chicagoland, the United States, and the world. She is also a certified lactation counselor and officer in the Chicago Region Breastfeeding Task Force, which supports community-led lactation care on the South and West sides of Chicago. She earned her PhD in anthropology from Northwestern University in 2023 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the UIC Center of Excellence in Maternal and Child Health in 2025.

Join the Protect Our Care Illinois (POC-IL) coalition on September 16 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. for a virtual community conversation about HR1 and Medicaid changes in Illinois—specifically, what HR1 means for Medicaid in the state.

Healthcare is under attack in Illinois and across the country. Provisions within HR1 have already begun to alter Medicaid, threatening coverage for millions of people nationwide, including many here in Illinois. Destinee (she/her) is a full-spectrum doula, impact producer, and reproductive justice advocate whose work sits at the intersection of maternal health, culture, spirituality, and community power. As Black Perinatal Health Coordinator at Birthworkers of Color Collective, she coordinates regional and national perinatal health initiatives, strengthens networks of Black doulas and community partners, connects families to culturally responsive care, and supports health education, advocacy, and community engagement. Her approach is rooted in collective care, coalition building, and creating more equitable systems that allow individuals, families, and communities to thrive..
