The Austin neighborhood began in 1864 as a development by Henry Austin. It was built at the first stop on the Chicago and Galena Railroad as a farm town, and was called “Austinville.” Austin set about attracting industry to his town, an

d it developed, paradoxically, into both a bedroom community for commuters, and an industrial town in its on right. It was annexed to Chicago in 1889. The Austin Chamber of Commerce works to continue the legacy to attract business and industry into the Austin neighborhood. The Chamber works with all stakeholders (e.g., local businesses, investors, residents, schools, churches, community-based organizations, and government agencies) to enhance the economic capacity of the Austin community.

Mamie's decision to show the world what had been done to her son ensured that the truth could not be hidden. The movement for justice that followed would help reshape the nation and inspire generations to come.

THE FIGHT OVER MAIL VOTING IS NOT OVER

President Trump's administration is fighting to change how USPS handles mail ballots before the November election.

Democratic congressional and party leaders are challenging those changes in court. Their argument is straightforward: the Constitution gives states and Congress authority over federal elections, not the president, and changing mail-ballot procedures this close to an election risks creating “chaos and confusion” for voters.

For now, a federal judge has blocked the new USPS requirements from taking effect for the November election, citing serious legal questions and the risk that eligible voters could be disenfranchised. The administration continues to fight that ruling.

Democratic leaders say they are responding on three fronts:

Challenging the changes in court
Defending state authority over elections
Expanding voter-protection efforts

For voters, the most important thing right now is not to let the legal fight create confusion.
