Office of Mathematics Education - UIC The Office of Mathematics Education (OME) aims to provide opportunities for prospective and practici

Our mission is to prepare elementary and secondary teachers that are proficient in mathematics and are committed to improving the education of all students. We offer degree programs, at the undergraduate and graduate levels, for prospective and practicing mathematics teachers. Our programs reflect a strong orientation towards inquiry-based pedagogies, and incorporate current research and effective

practices in the mathematical preparation of teachers. The OME also hosts an active research program in mathematics education. Faculty members direct a number of outreach programs for local schools, students, teachers and families. Faculty members are also investigators on federally-funded research projects and authors of nationally influential curricula for mathematics and science education.

Transforming the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics K–12

The Metro Chicago Mathematics Initiative will be offering a 2019 Mathematics Summer Institute for teachers and administrators.

WHO should attend: Teachers of mathematics and administrators in grades K–12.

Teachers will work in grade-band groups on core issues of mathematics teaching and learning.
Teachers can also select breakout sessions based on their interests, contexts, and prior experience. Teachers either new to or experienced with our work are encouraged to attend.

Administrators may attend special workshops immediately following the featured speaker addresses. Administrators interested in working with teacher groups are also welcome to do so.

WHEN/WHERE: The two-day institute will run July 31–August 1 at Elmwood Park High School in Elmwood Park, IL.

ILLINOIS COUNCIL OF TEACHERS OF MATHEMATICS

SCHOLARSHIPS IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION

The ILLINOIS COUNCIL OF TEACHERS OF MATHEMATICS will be presenting its twenty-fourth annual Scholarships in Mathematics Education in October of 2019 at the ICTM Annual Meeting.

There will be a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 awards granted of $1500.00 to help defray educational expenses of the recipients.

To be eligible, a student must:

1. Be enrolled in an accredited university or college in Illinois during Spring 2019.
2. Have junior or senior status as of Spring 2019 with graduation during May 2019 or later and must be working on his/her first bachelor’s degree.
3. Be a mathematics education major, a mathematics major with an education minor, or an education major with an official mathematics emphasis.
4. Have a total over all GPA of at least 3.00 from all colleges attended (based on 4.00).
5. Intend to teach in Illinois.
6. Submit the following:
A. A completed ICTM scholarship application form.
B. Transcripts from ALL COLLEGES ATTENDED (these may be student copies).
C. Letters of recommendation from two mathematics teachers, high school or college. These letters must state the capacity in which the writer knew the applicant and address his/her potential as a mathematics teacher.
D. Two 200-300 word essays as requested below.
E. A completed lesson planning form which is attached.

The application is also available online at www.ictm.org under the Scholarship tab. Forms can be completed electronically and emailed to [email protected]. Letters and other documents may still be mailed to our address above, preferably in one envelope.

The completed application forms must be received in one mailing and must be postmarked on or before March 15, 2019. The recipients of the scholarship awards will be announced in June 2019 and awarded at the October 2019 Annual ICTM Awards Reception.
