Illinois is joining 24 other states in suing to block new U.S. Postal Service rules that would give USPS the power to determine who can receive and cast a mail-in ballot. The states argue that states, not the Postal Service, have the authority to determine voter eligibility and administer elections.

Nearly 1 million Illinoisans voted by mail in 2024. With mail voting set to begin in Illinois on September 24, the lawsuit is seeking emergency relief before the midterm elections.

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul on Wednesday announced the lawsuit, arguing President Donald Trump’s executive order is unconstitutional and risks disenfranchising voters by preventing states from effectively administering their vote-by-mail programs.

As National Breastfeeding Month comes to a close, Shannon Dawson examines why Black birth givers in the U.S. continue to face significant barriers to breastfeeding from unequal healthcare and lack of culturally responsive lactation support to workplace and economic challenges.

We must address the systemic barriers so that Black birth givers can succeed:
🔸 Support Black-led breastfeeding and maternal-health organizations,
🔸 Advocate for paid leave and workplace protections, and
🔸 Push healthcare systems to provide equitable, culturally responsive care.

As National Breastfeeding Month continues, it's clear that Black mothers need more resources and community backing to successfully breastfeed their babies.

Chicago’s domestic violence survivors are being turned away as the need for shelter and support continues to grow. A new City Bureau investigation examines how funding cuts, unstable federal grants and a shortage of shelter beds are leaving survivors without the help they need.

But there are ways you can help: consider donating to The Network’s Survivor Fund, supporting organizations serving survivors, and advocating for stable funding for these critical services.

Between COVID-era ARPA funding, federal cuts from the Trump administration and increased need in Chicago and Illinois, survivors of gender-based violence are losing out on shelter beds and legal help.

Illinois voters: stay informed and pay attention.

The Supreme Court did not rule that Trump’s proposed restrictions on mail voting are legal, and it did not end vote-by-mail. A separate court order is still blocking the Postal Service from implementing the new rules.

But the Court’s decision does allow the administration to keep pushing forward while the legal fight continues, creating uncertainty just weeks before the midterms.

For Illinoisans, your ability to vote by mail has not changed at this time, but this is worth watching closely, and making a backup plan.

She Votes Illinois was proud to advocate for SB3465 as part of our menstrual equity initiative. Signed into law Friday, the bill requires construction sites to provide free menstrual products, private restrooms and stronger accommodations for workers who menstruate or are lactating.

These basic workplace protections that can help more women and gender-diverse workers enter, stay in and thrive in the trades.
