Yesterday, the substitute School Safety Zone Ordinance passed the Public Safety Committee. After being stalled last week by the mayor and his allies, its passage today is an important step in the right direction for common-sense legislation.

Kids should not have to walk through open-air drug markets on their way to and from school. The same way CPD keeps tourist areas clear downtown should also apply to our neighborhoods. I thank my colleagues for their collaboration in getting this overdue legislation passed.

While many comments were made yesterday, I am extremely grateful that our community, who have lived in this area for decades, made their voices heard about the realities they experience every day.

I remain committed to getting this done and will continue to pull every lever available to do so.

[ES] Ayer, el Comité de Seguridad Pública aprobó la ordenanza sustitutiva relativa a las zonas de seguridad escolar. Tras haber sido bloqueada la semana pasada por el alcalde y sus aliados, su aprobación hoy representa un paso importante en la dirección correcta hacia una legislación basada en el sentido común.

Los niños no deberían tener que caminar por mercados de dr**as al aire libre al ir y volver de la escuela. El mismo criterio que aplica el Departamento de Policía de Chicago (CPD) para mantener despejadas las zonas turísticas del centro debería aplicarse también en nuestros vecindarios. Agradezco a mis colegas su colaboración para lograr la aprobación de esta medida, cuya implementación se había hecho esperar demasiado.

Si bien ayer se expresaron diversas opiniones, agradezco profundamente que nuestra comunidad —que lleva décadas viviendo en esta zona— haya alzado la voz para compartir la realidad de su vida cotidiana.

Mantengo mi firme compromiso de impulsar esta iniciativa y seguiré utilizando todos los medios a mi alcance para lograrlo.

Drivers across the city, especially Honda owners, are feeling the effects of the rise in thefts and this new black market.

My ordinance will disrupt this and enable CPD to take stronger action against shops trying to sell stolen airbags as legit replacements.

Mi ordenanza frenará esta situación y permitirá al CPD tomar medidas más contundentes contra los talleres que intenten vender bolsas de aire robadas como repuestos legítimos.

Proud dad moment: Both of our sons have reached major milestones. Last month, they graduated from both Saint Patrick High School and Marquette University.

Aiden is headed to Michigan State University to begin his next chapter, while Gilbert is entering the workforce after earning his degree in Civil Engineering.
