At the Super Bowl LV, WAWA's World performed the National Anthem in American Sign Language (ASL) -- what an incredible performance!

[Screen recording taken from camera feed provided by CBS Sports.]

TRANSCRIPT:
Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

WAWA's World blew us away with this American Sign Language (ASL) performance of 'America, The Beautiful' at Super Bowl LV.

[Screen recording taken from camera feed provided by CBS Sports.]

TRANSCRIPT:
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

Dear Chicagoland Deaf Community and our customers,

Today, the doors to Swoboda Deaf Center (SDC) remain closed. The rebuild is underway, reopening of the center will not happen this year but hopefully early in 2021. All prior scheduled events will be cancelled for the rest of the year and new requests will not be accepted until the rebuild is complete and guidance from the authorities.

Thank you for reaching out to us with concerns and inquiries. Although modern technology we have nowadays make it possible to stay in touch with our friends and loved ones using various devices, that does not replace the feeling one gets from getting together in person. Swoboda Deaf Center was established with the purpose of having a “home away from home” for the Deaf Community to gather together for events where communication is fully accessible. The center also was open to the public who appreciated our service and the atmosphere at our center. Your messages have proven that the center does matter. We all at SDC miss seeing you at Game Days, Social Nights, baggo/sports events, meetings and private events to name a few!

As SDC remains closed, funds are stretched thin to cover ongoing monthly expenses i.e. heating, electric, insurance, etc. It was not even possible to operate at a reduced capacity due to the restoration work from the fire. Your contributions will help keep SDC afloat until it reopens. A fundraiser has been posted on our page. Donations can also be sent via mail to Swoboda Deaf Center, 7050 W. Belmont Avenue, Chicago, IL 60634 or via PayPal and Zelle to [email protected].

Donors will be recognized at SDC when it reopens. If you wish to be anonymous, please include a note with your donation. Also, if you wish to receive a donation acknowledgement letter for donations, please send your contact information.

Amazon Smile is another way you can support SDC. Search ‘Chicago Area Catholic Deaf Center Foundation’ as the charity organization and for every purchase you make a percentage will be donated by Amazon to the Foundation for SDC. Any questions, please contact us.

Updates will be shared periodically. With this pandemic our country is fighting, everything is uncertain. We all at Swoboda Deaf Center are with you in prayers that the vaccines will be distributed soon and that they will help flatten the curve. Please stay safe & healthy over the upcoming holidays.

Sincerely,

All of Us at Swoboda Deaf Center

Update from SDC - September 21, 2020

The center remains closed until end of this year, the rebuild is in the works and hopefully completed late in 2020 or early 2021.

Let's bring in NEW SDC for 2021 - Foundation and SDC are looking for able body to be on Foundation Board and SDC for 2021 If any interest, reach out to one of us. See other posts on this subject in SDC page.

There is Fundraising page for Swoboda Deaf Center, any donation would be appreciated to keep SDC funds afloat into 2021 as no source of revenue was earned to cover ongoing expenses such as electric, water, gas, maintenance - or via PayPal: [email protected]

The rebuild of property is covered by insurance, again we hope to have this rebuild project done in time for 2021, however please stay safe as the center may continue to close due to COVID regulations and compliance, until this all clears out, please stay safe and wear mask.

Foundation and SDC miss all of you for private events, deaf community events and SDC Game Days/Events, and many more.

Welcome Fall, stay safe, keep warm until then.

Live in ASL: White House Coronavirus Task Force Briefing March 22nd, 2020

03/18/2020

March 17, 2020

To our Customers,

With regrets, we at Swoboda Deaf Center have decided to cancel all the upcoming events from now through the end of April. Our reason is two-fold. You may have or may not have heard, but there was a fire in one of the apartment units above our center on Sunday, March 8th. There is significant fire damage on the 2nd floor and there is also water damage in the center. Demolition is still underway on both floors. Then there is the pandemic spread of COVID-19 coronavirus.

This COVID-19 outbreak is an event unique in our lifetime. Diseases and epidemics have occurred in our history and medical advances have protected many of us from such outbreaks. While we are continuing to learn and absorb information on the danger of this coronavirus, Center on Disease Control (CDC) has provided guidelines for us to follow to slow the spread of this coronavirus. As of March 16th, they recommended that no gatherings of more than 10 people to take place which led us to our decision.

Full refunds are sent to customers who have put down payments. As for our center returning to normal operations, we are uncertain. Restoration clearly will take some time, but with the closings due to COVID-19 outbreak, the demolition and restoration process may be held up. Please do check our page or website for updates.

Stay safe.

Sincerely,

Swoboda Deaf Center
