The Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) was established when President Woodrow Wilson signed the National Defense Act of 1916. Since its inception, Army ROTC has provided leadership and military training at schools and universities across the country and has commissioned more than a half million Officers. It is the largest commissioning source in the American military. Army ROTC is one of the most demanding and successful leadership programs in the country. For years, Army ROTC has been creating leaders who go on to rewarding careers in the military and civilian worlds. Army ROTC produces approximately 60 percent of the Second Lieutenants who join the active Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard. More than 40 percent of current Active Duty Army General Officers were commissioned through ROTC. www.Army.mil

Good morning and Happy Veterans Day! Today we began virtual PT with the 22 Push-up Challenge. It is estimated that 22 veterans commit suicide each day. We do 22 push ups to promote awareness of veteran suicide prevention along with honoring military service members and veterans.

We also shared photos of veterans within our IIT AROTC family. Thank you for your service!

Meet MSII CDT Anthony Dugan, "I enjoy the outdoors a lot, mostly fishing. I grew up with my father teaching me how to fish! I also enjoy reading, but sometimes the homework load is a little much, so I have been getting into audiobooks. I joined ROTC to develop drive and motivation that I feel you can only get from the branches. I hope to branch Infantry!"

Please meet Dr. Jennifer J. Kang-Mieler!

She is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Illinois Tech. She graduated from Northwestern University for both of her Undergraduate and Graduate studies. She teaches various BME classes, including the BME Senior Capstone design.

In late June 2017, she was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. Her cancer was aggressive, so she started chemotherapy immediately. She went through six rounds of chemotherapy, had double mastectomy and continued infusion immunotherapy for an entire year. She is about 2 years out from her treatment. She is a fighter!

Her favorite quote is "Cancer shaped me, but it did not define me. It's part of me, but not all of me." - Hoda Kotb (who also went through breast cancer treatment)

This month, IIT AROTC dedicated all their miles to Professor Kang-Mieler. In total, cadets walked/ran 500.3 miles to honor the courage, bravery, and resilience of Dr. Kang-Mieler's fight against breast cancer. Your fight inspires us.

Good morning! PT this morning consisted of IIT AROTC and friends conducting its “Join the fight, one mile at a time” Breast Cancer Awareness Halloween Run!

IIT AROTC Cadets and Cadre dedicated this month to raising Breast Cancer Awareness by collecting as many miles as they could, all for a great cause. Some cadets expressed who they run for!

Good afternoon! Tomorrow we will be conducting a Halloween Run! Wear your Halloween costume and run with us! If you do not have a costume, wear PINK for breast cancer awareness month!!!

We will adhere to COVID-19 guidelines as far as social distancing, wearing masks, and no more than 6-10 students in a group.

To raise Breast Cancer Awareness, during the month of October, we have collected miles using a Running Tracker App (Endomando, Nike Run Club, Apple Watch, etc.). We will be announcing the top 3 people with the most miles!

We hope to see you there, joining our team to fight breast cancer, one mile at a time!!

Good afternoon! This past weekend, Fire Battalion Cadets rucked 12 miles, starting bright and early along Chicago’s Lakeshore Drive! The MSI-MSIIIs had the opportunity to meet cadets from other schools within the battalion and better there rucking abilities. The MSIVs are one step closer to commissioning!

Meet MSII CDT Emily Garza, “I’ve always loved playing sports and I am currently a goalkeeper for the IIT Women’s Soccer Team. Just as I’m proud to represent my school as a student athlete, I look forward to one day representing my country as a soldier in the US Army. After transferring to Army ROTC from Air Force ROTC during my second semester of last year, I’ve found that some of the greatest things I value from ROTC are the relationships I’ve been able to build with my fellow cadets and the experiences that I’ve been able to learn from after just under a year in the program. It’s been an experience unlike any other, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

CDT Garza is from Plymouth, Michigan and her major is Psychological Sciences, specializing in Rehabilitation. She is IIT’s AROTC 3rd Squad Leader (3SL).

Meet MSII CDT Jacob Doyle, “For someone who has lived in the city of Chicago their whole life, I love agriculture. If I could, I would own a farm or ranch right now. It would be everything I could ever imagine I'd need: open land, clean air, hard, fulfilling work, a family to love and care for, and a small, tight-knit community of folks working a job that never gets easy and never gets old. At least right now through ROTC, and my future career in the National Guard, I know I can have most, if not all, of those things through the Army! I am very passionate about physical fitness; I play guitar, bass, and the trumpet; and I also enjoy reading when I can find the time.”
