🌳 Healthy trees are one of nature’s best defenses against flooding!

Trees do more than beautify our neighborhoods. Their leaves, branches, and roots help capture rainfall, absorb stormwater, stabilize soil, and reduce runoff before it reaches our streets and sewer systems.

Planting and caring for trees is a simple way we can help create stronger, greener, and more flood-resilient communities. 💧

Through MWRD’s Restore the Canopy program, Cook County residents can pick up free native oak saplings and help grow our region’s tree canopy.

🎣 What’s your favorite Lake Michigan fish to catch?

Salmon? Walleye? Lake trout? Smelt?

Behind the health of these incredible fisheries is decades of international cooperation through the Great Lakes Fishery Commission

Recently, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago Board sponsored a resolution celebrating 70 years of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission—a milestone in protecting one of the world’s largest freshwater ecosystems! 💧

For seven decades, the Commission has advanced research, strengthened partnerships between the U.S. and Canada, helped restore native species, controlled invasive threats like sea lamprey, and supported the long-term health of Lake Michigan and the entire Great Lakes system.

Here’s to continued collaboration and stewardship of these incredible waters for generations to come! 🌊

Team Kirkwood had a fantastic day at the Village of Evergreen Park Farmers Market! 🌱💧 Every Thursday from 8 AM to 1 PM!

Team Kirkwood had a blast sharing information about the district’s services and talking with residents about how we treat wastewater and protect our water resources.

We loved connecting with so many residents interested in our native prairie seeds, oak saplings that help reduce flooding, and rain barrels that help keep stormwater out of the sewer system. 🌳🌧️

It was also fantastic to bump into Homegirls Hummus - you might recognize them from their recent spot on WGN TV! 👏

What a fantastic evening at the Kenilworth Assembly Hall & Kenilworth Park District! 🌳☀️

Team Kirkwood was thrilled to be out in the park connecting with neighbors, sharing information about the District’s services, and promoting our summer initiatives to restore the tree canopy and encourage rain barrel use for sustainable stormwater management. 💧🌱

It was also wonderful to see our youngest residents getting involved and learning about the District through our coloring activity books and crayons. 🖍️💚

Events like this are a wonderful reminder of the power of community. When we come together to enjoy our shared green spaces, support local businesses, and invest in our environment, we’re not just enjoying a beautiful summer evening—we’re helping build a healthier, greener, and more vibrant future for the next generation.

The music was flowing, kids were running and playing, and the community energy was absolutely incredible. If you were there, you know the lines for U Dawg U • Northfield and Cheesie's Pub & Grub - Lakeview were long, but definitely worth the wait! 🌭🍟

Thank you to everyone who came out and made it such a memorable night! 💚
