Mes de la Herencia Hispana: Educación Bilingüe // Hispanic Heritage Month: Bilingual Education
In the closing days of Hispanic Heritage Month, we’d like to recognize the contributions of local latine leaders. Ms. Daniela Soto, CPS educator, advocates for bilingual education starting from within her first grade Little Village classroom. Focusing on language acquisition in McCormick Elementary, Ms. Soto has the honor of teaching Dual Language, consisting of 80% in Spanish to help create a strong academic base for her students. With a decade of practice and stemming from her personal experience in immigrating to Chicago at the age of 13, she uses her own experiences to advocate for bilingual education. We want to thank you for your contributions to the community and the district!

Black women are paid 58 cents for every dollar paid to white men. In 2022, Black women would have to work until Sept. 21 to catch up to white men. It is important that we bring awareness to the pay gap disparity that effects working black women across America every day.

Under our current cash bail system, a person arrested for murder who can afford their bail can be let back out on the street before their day in court. This puts our community in danger, so I voted to pass the SAFE-T Act to ensure that can't happen. Starting Jan. 1, 2023, the SAFE-T Act will give courts more discretion on whether someone poses a threat to the community and should remain behind bars (pages 335-337). Read the SAFE-T Act at bit.ly/SAFE-TAct .
Simply put, the SAFE-T Act gets smart on crime and aims to create a fairer justice system. Pretrial detention will be based on an offender’s risk to our community, not their ability to pay.
There's been a lot of misinformation out there regarding the SAFE-T Act. The cash bail reforms made under the law will make communities safer by allowing courts to hold violent offenders who would ordinarily be able to bail out. Judges and law enforcement can still detain those who are a threat to the community under the SAFE-T Act.

Today I’m thinking of the thousands who lost their lives 21 years ago, and remembering how Americans helped each other cope, recover and grieve. We will forever remember the courageous first responders and average Americans who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Bravery. Compassion. Courage. Grief. We saw it all from the first responders and everyday citizens who witnessed and helped rescue survivors in the wake of the 2001 bombings. 21 years later, let’s regather that American spirit in memory of the lost.

As an advocate for supporting healthy and strong families, I believe in investing in our communities to increase access to resources that help Illinois residents live their most fulfilling lives regardless of race, status or other factors. Como defensora del apoyo a familias sanas y fuertes, creo en invertir en nuestras comunidades para aumentar el acceso a recursos que ayuden a los residentes de Illinois a vivir una vida más plena, independientemente de su raza, estado y otros factores.
My colleagues and I are working diligently to improve child care in the state with our Strengthening Illinois Families and Children legislation package. Setting our future generations up for success must begin at their earliest stage of development, which is why I am proud to be a part of the team prioritizing the expansion of access to resources and opportunities for Illinois families in the General Assembly.

📢 This morning I joined community leaders, advocates and other elected officials in Little Village to say that Black Lives Matter. The fight for Black lives is not separate from our fight for immigration reform - we are up against the same White supremacist structures that have criminalized and killed countless Black and Brown bodies. We are in this together and Little Village will proudly fly the Black Lives Matter banner.

For #WomensHistoryMonth I highlighted Fannie Lou Hamer. It is important for me to understand and recognize the roles that women of color played in the movements that shaped our nation. When we think of civil rights, we always hear about the big folks like Martin Luther King and other male leaders. Oftentimes it is women behind the scenes who make movements grow and have an impact on our nation's history. Those women, like Fannie Lou Hamer, deserve to have their stories heard.
Today was a very emotional day. KIFTA just passed the IL Senate with the help of sponsor Sen. Harmon! I want to congratulate all of the people and organizations that have spent countless hours, sweat, and tears to see this happen. This bill now goes to the Governor to be signed. If signed, KIFTA will ensure that local law-enforcement agencies will not enter into contracts with federal immigration officials. This is a huge step in the right direction to help immigrant and refugee families feel safer to call IL home.
