Today is International #HolocaustRemembranceDay, marking the 76th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp. Together we can learn from the past and protect the future. #WeRemember

From 1940-1945, approximately 1.3 million prisoners, most of them Jewish, were deported to Auschwitz. Of those, 1.1 million were murdered. #OnThisDay in 1945, the 322nd Rifle Division of the Soviet Army liberated the Auschwitz death camp, freeing 7,000 prisoners.

This International #HolocaustRemembranceDay, we honor the millions of victims murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators and allies.

Instacart is firing every employee who voted to unionize

Instacart is firing nearly 2,000 grocery workers who are bravely putting their health at risk during #COVID to help feed families across the country, including 10 right here in Skokie.

I join UFCW Local 1546 in demanding a halt to these ruthless cuts as #COVID cases surge.

For everyone who has relied on and/or thanked an Essential Worker during the last 10 months, now is the time we need to stand with them as they are being targeted.

Instacart is shutting down some of its in-store operations in favor of curbside pickups amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

This #MLKDay2021, let us honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by speaking and working with one another respectfully to non-violently end the injustices that we see today.

This week marks 2 years since I was sworn in to represent the people of Illinois' 8th State Senate District.

Back then, I could not have imagined a pandemic, economic recession, nationwide protests in response to police brutality at the forefront once again, and intense challenges to our Democracy. My team and I have given it our all to meet these challenges with and on behalf of the communities we represent. We have worked for the people every day, and continue to do so.

Over the last 2 years, it has been my honor to:

🔹 Sponsor more than a dozen pieces of legislation, ranging from a ban on right to work zones to safeguarding the rights of LGBTQ elders

🔹 Help pass legislation including a historic capital plan to ensure safe infrastructure and expand public transit, raising the minimum wage, protecting women's rights, expanding immigrants' access to safety and justice, creating new industries such as cannabis and gaming, and more

🔹 Answer thousands of constituent calls and email and work on nearly 1000 cases in 10 languages (thanks in part to our incredible community partners!), including 730+ unemployment cases

🔹 Attend and hold hundreds of community meetings with teachers and principals, small businesses, nonprofits, neighborhood councils and block clubs, religious groups, our Multicultural Advisory Committee, and more

🔹 Host 30+ constituent events from town halls to property tax repeal seminars to touch-a-truck events and everything in between

I look forward to continuing to work with and on behalf of the 217,000 residents of the 8th district.

And, as always, my team and I are here to help. If you need assistance with unemployment benefits, food or medication delivery, small business resources, SNAP, Medicaid, or anything else, please give us a call at 872-208-5188, text 224-592-5819, or email [email protected].

📣Wrap up for Lameduck Session Day 2 - Here are a few highlights from today:

🔹 House Bill 2275 - Repeal Section 4.5 of Illinois' Education Code - Passed

The 1995 Chicago School Reform Act limited what Chicago educators and school staff could address through collective bargaining. This created a different set of school governance rules for Chicago versus the rest of the State. HB 2275, which now heads to the governor's desk, reinstates these bargaining rights, the same rights more than 800 school districts have across the state of Illinois.

Read the full legislation: bit.ly/hb2275

🔹 House Bill 2170 - Legislative Black Caucus Education Pillar - Passed

This critical legislation will have a positive impact on students around the state. It expands access to early intervention services, creates an inclusive American history curriculum, starts the process of funding higher education more equitably, modernizes teacher training while working to make it more accessible to BIPOC, and more.

Read the full legislation (Amendment 3): bit.ly/HB2170

🔹 House Bill 2451 - Amends the Firefighter Article of the Pension Code - Passed

This legislation creates transparency with regards to the retirement income that our firefighters, essential workers who have been on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, have earned through their years and years of service.

🏛 Tomorrow, I am headed back to Springfield for legislative session. This week's white supremacist-led attempted coup in DC has strengthened my resolve, and that of my colleagues, to work through our democratic institutions to help Illinoisans through this incredible difficult time.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, my office has helped 700+ constituents with unemployment benefits cases. My team has heard about needed improvements time and again from constituents, and I am taking all of those ideas with me to Springfield as SB 4026. My bill aims to increase transparency and effectiveness in administering unemployment insurance.

I also look forward to working with the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation on their critical and timely agenda. The ILBC has introduced four omnibus bills to take on criminal justice reform, education and workforce development, equity in economic assistance and opportunities, and improving health care and human services.

State Lawmakers Call on Illinois Congresswoman Who Invoked Hitler to Resign

U.S. Congressperson Mary Miller has demonstrated an act of blatant anti-Semitism and disrespect to the Jewish people and all who perished at the hands of the Nazis.

A sitting member of Congress who uses Hitler’s obscene methods for indoctrinating children with racism and fascism as a guidepost, igniting hate and violence has no place in our democracy.

As an Illinois State Senator, the son of immigrants and an American, it is both disheartening and angering for me to watch a white supremacist-led attempted coup egged on by the President himself.

I condemn the actions of the President and these extremists. Furthermore, Illinois Congresswoman Mary Miller's decision to praise Hitler and signaled to Neo-Nazis and anti-Semites to help the President prompt a violent coup is reprehensible. At a minimum, she owes the Jewish people an apology. Illinoisans expect and deserve for their representatives to denounce hate - not embolden it.

Still, I know our democracy is strong. We will root out hate and move forward, and it’s going to take all of us.
