It's Opening Weekend 🎉 for Qaumajuq, an innovative new museum and home of the largest public collection of contemporary #Inuit art in the world. This first-of-its-kind centre connects to the Winnipeg Art Gallery, creating a cultural campus in the heart of the city. Explore their collection and share in the celebration!

Michael Maltzan, the architect who designed Qaumajuq, was inspired by an expedition to Nunavut where the team visited Inuit communities and artists’ studios. The undulating white stone of Qaumajuq’s façade hovers above the ground, as if floating over the glass-filled lobby. It’s abstract qual...

Making space for nature starts at home. Take on Environment and Climate Change #ProtectNature 🇨🇦 Challenge #24 - build homes for wildlife.

Learn how to properly build a 🐦, 🦇 or 🐝 house. By creating homes for these creatures, you are helping them to survive and thrive, particularly in urban environments, where it might be harder for them to find a good home.

For resources on learning to build a nest box for birds, a bat house and a mason bee hive, use the link below. Because there's no place like home.

Each ecosystem lives in a delicately balanced state, here and elsewhere. Pets are often bred or transported long distances, without consideration for their natural habitat. Please do not make your pet the reason for ecosystem destruction. Avoid buying exotic and endangered wildlife is Environment and Climate Change 🇨🇦 #ProtectNature Challenge #20.

Don't release exotic animals into the wild. Most household pets and live species in the fish market (such as Asian bighead carp) are not native to Canada or the US. Therefore, they should not be released into the environment where they may pose a threat to native species. The photo below is from the Illinois River. Invasive Asian carp threaten the health of the Great Lakes.

Don't buy souvenirs of endangered species. It is illegal to transport live specimens and products from endangered species across international borders. When traveling, know what species are endangered so that you do not purchase items that will perpetuate the trade in endangered species.

Find out more about what you can do to help biodiversity at Canada.ca/biodiversity.

Did you know that there are more than 800 Alliances Françaises on the planet, which makes it the largest cultural organization in the world?

It is the cultural diversity of this network that we want to celebrate on International Francophonie Day, tomorrow, March 20th. The Alliance Française de Chicago is holding a Tournée des Alliances, travelling from Sweden to Cameroon for short stopovers with our Alliance friends elsewhere. The program will be held in French (bien sur).

They will be holding “youth” stopovers in the morning between 9:00 am and 11:00 am Central, for all between 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm Central.

We are very excited about the event host -- Webster, Quebec rapper and historian of Senegalese descent, who will join in from Montreal.

Sign up to receive a Zoom link and be able to ask questions. You can also watch live on the Alliance's page.

Today, the #ProtectNature Challenge is to become part of the circular 🔄 economy, extracting as much value as possible by recycling, repairing, reusing, repurposing, or refurbishing products and materials.

The long-term goal of the circular economy is to design out the concept of waste. Environment and Climate Change 🇨🇦 has six ideas on how you can participate.

At the Consulate General, we love our libraries and bike share (shout out to Chicago Public Library and Divvy Bikes). At our social media manager's home (and office for the past year), she repurposed these drink bottles for cooking oils. What can you do at home? Ideas: https://canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/nature-legacy/activities/become-part-of-circular-economy.html

Indigenous Peoples have been leaders in environmental stewardship, sustainable development and the management of natural resources on their lands since time immemorial.

Research has shown that spaces managed by Indigenous Peoples worldwide are significantly more biodiverse.

There are many initiatives now focusing on Indigenous leadership in nature conservation, including Indigenous guardians and Indigenous protected and conserved areas.

It is important for everyone to understand how Indigenous knowledge and leadership are key in conserving our natural environment.

Beat Plastic Pollution – Protect Nature Challenge #16 - Canada.ca

Plastic. It's everywhere. Canadians and Americans throw away millions of TONS of plastic waste annually. Only a small fraction is ♻️ while the rest ends up in our landfills, waste-to-energy facilities or the environment.

Plastic waste and marine litter threaten the health of our environment including wildlife, rivers, lakes and oceans.

Join Environment and Climate Change 🇨🇦 in reducing plastic pollution and reaching a vision of a future with Keycap digit zero plastic waste.

#ProtectNature Challenge #16

https://canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/nature-legacy/activities/beat-plastic-pollution.html

Canadians throw away over three million tonnes of plastic waste every year. That’s as heavy as 25,000 blue whales! Only 9 percent is recycled while the rest ends up in our landfills, waste-to-energy facilities or the environment.

Had it succeeded, a 19th century attempt by Irish Americans to force the British out of Ireland by invading Canada would be remembered as the boldest flanking maneuver in military history. The story of the ill-fated plot begins in Chicago in 1863.

Poor air quality affects us all, including wildlife. Poor air quality can directly affect wildlife health, and it can affect food quality and availability.

Here are four ways you can help improve air quality (Environment and Climate Change 🇨🇦 #ProtectNature Challenge Day 11) for us all:

1️⃣ Carpool, ride your bike, take the bus or walk more often. Motor vehicles are a major contributor to smog, especially in large urban areas where traffic is heavy.

2️⃣ Consider switching to things like an electric vehicle for shopping or a battery-powered lawnmower or leaf blower for yard work.

3️⃣ Save energy. A large portion of home heating is produced by fossil fuels (coal, gas and oil). Have an energy audit done on your home to help identify ways to make it more energy efficient. By using less energy for heating and by reducing your electricity consumption, you will help keep the air clean.
Support renewable energy. Find out about government rebate programs.

4️⃣ Plant trees to increase the urban forest canopy, provide shade and improve air quality.
