One year of COVID-19 in Chicago

One year ago we decompressed our three shelters and moved to a 24/7 operating model. Despite the challenges we faced during the pandemic we were still able to provide 124,923 nights of shelter, serve 258,816 healthy meals, and helped 88 people find a place to call home!

What a year it has been, but there is hope for the future- over 40% of our guests have been vaccinated so far!

When COVID-19 was declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020, even some of the most informed people knew little about coronaviruses — and far less about SARS-CoV-2, the new coronavirus that was upending the world as we knew it. But a prolonged global threat to commerce, lifestyles and million...

"Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in our country's history. Black history does not only live in the past, however, it continues to be written each day. Today we have the honor of having a remarkable woman and community leader with us here to have a thought-provoking conversation about race relations, civil rights and other crucial topics surrounding Black Identify." Executive Director, Richard Ducatenzeiler.

Many thanks to Chicago Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin
for joining us this morning and sharing her story of courage and empowerment.

The crucial conversation on racial equity continued as staff and guests enjoyed lunch.

Chicago Shelters Struggle to Meet the Need in a COVID Winter – South Side Weekly

“I’m sure the city shares my concern as far as there not being enough beds at the moment, and what to do because we’re still trying to maintain capacity and social distancing. But at the same time if we know people are outside and in need of shelter, it’s hard to turn them away,” said executive director Richard Ducatenzeiler.

Some people experiencing homelessness have been forced to choose between risking COVID-19 in a crowded—but warm—shelter or braving the cold to avoid an increased risk of contracting the virus.

A picture is worth a thousand words and beautifully captures one of the most remarkable moments in our agency’s history. Many of us wondered what this day would be like and now that the COVID-19 vaccine is available as part of Illinois’ Phase 1b to our shelter guests and frontline heroes, there is a sense of joy and optimism that hasn’t been felt over the past 12 months. Today, as the first dosage was administered, we collectively felt a renewed sense of hope as we move toward a brighter tomorrow. We are so grateful to our healthcare partner, Lawndale Christian Health Center, and their team of dedicated staff who will continue to administer the COVID-19 vaccine to some of our city’s most vulnerable residents.

Seniors, shelters eager to get the COVID-19 vaccine as Illinois enters the next phase — but they hope the pace picks up

Franciscan Outreach guests and staff will begin receiving the first dosage of the vaccine starting next week. It is a glimmer of hope in what has been an extremely arduous time for our community.

Hundreds of thousands of people in the Chicago area will be added to the roster of those allowed vaccines starting on Monday, but many will be waiting longer to receive their first shot, officials have said.

Aetna drops Walgreens from its Medicaid plan, making it harder for low-income Chicagoans to get their prescriptions during the pandemic

For Chicagoans living on the West and South sides, the City has become a pharmacy desert preventing many from obtaining life-saving medical prescriptions.

Yesterday, Fred, a guest residing at a Franciscan Outreach shelter, informed Dr. Tom Hugget that his prescription couldn't be filled at a nearby Walgreens because Aetna cut Walgreens from its Medicaid plan.

Homeless Persons' Memorial by Old Saint Patrick's Church

This evening, we will gather to remember and honor the lives of those who have passed away while experiencing homelessness over the past year. As we continue our fight against the COVID-19 crisis, we must not forget that housing continues to be a fundamental need and is what protects individuals from illness, violence, and death. Medical conditions often are untreated for many years because of the lack of accessible health care resulting in premature mortality. Addiction-related illnesses and drug overdoses are among the leading causes of death among individuals experiencing homelessness. Many of these deaths could have been prevented and let us all work together to build a community where no life is lost in homelessness. ~Executive Director, Richard Ducatenzeiler

Please join us this evening for the annual memorial, as we remember those we have lost this year and the gift they were to our community!

With winter approaching, homeless shelters face big challenges against coronavirus

"Our world has really been turned upside down the last several months," said Richard Ducatenzeiler, executive director of Franciscan Outreach." We converted one of our three dormitories in the shelter where the outbreak occurred into an isolation space, temporarily moving guests into a school sports complex while we repurposed the space. "The strength of his...whom he called "front-line heroes," gives him the drive to "continue to do our work and work towards our mission, but yes it's been a tremendous challenge."
