Many thanks to Robert Magiet of TaKorea Cocina for all you do. Your kindness is truly a blessing!
"After buying the tamales, Magiet drives the food to local homeless shelters or encampments. Thus far he’s partnered with Breakthrough Urban Ministries and Franciscan Outreach and he hopes to partner with more."

The work is funded by West Town Feeds, a fund started by neighbors who wanted to help those struggling to get food during the pandemic. "There are no qualifications. If you feel like you're in need, reach out. We got you."
Today as we continue our rounds of COVID-19 vaccinations, we wanted to highlight our incredible Director of Shelter Operations, Luwana, and share with you her reason why she got the COVID-19 Vaccine yesterday.
Thank you again to our amazing partners Lawndale Christian Health Center, we are truly grateful for all you do!
A picture is worth a thousand words and beautifully captures one of the most remarkable moments in our agency’s history. Many of us wondered what this day would be like and now that the COVID-19 vaccine is available as part of Illinois’ Phase 1b to our shelter guests and frontline heroes, there is a sense of joy and optimism that hasn’t been felt over the past 12 months. Today, as the first dosage was administered, we collectively felt a renewed sense of hope as we move toward a brighter tomorrow. We are so grateful to our healthcare partner, Lawndale Christian Health Center, and their team of dedicated staff who will continue to administer the COVID-19 vaccine to some of our city’s most vulnerable residents.

Franciscan Outreach guests and staff will begin receiving the first dosage of the vaccine starting next week. It is a glimmer of hope in what has been an extremely arduous time for our community.
Hundreds of thousands of people in the Chicago area will be added to the roster of those allowed vaccines starting on Monday, but many will be waiting longer to receive their first shot, officials have said.
Today we honor the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as we continue to serve our community we hold steadfast to Dr. King's sage words: “All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.”

Happy New Year
For Chicagoans living on the West and South sides, the City has become a pharmacy desert preventing many from obtaining life-saving medical prescriptions.
Yesterday, Fred, a guest residing at a Franciscan Outreach shelter, informed Dr. Tom Hugget that his prescription couldn't be filled at a nearby Walgreens because Aetna cut Walgreens from its Medicaid plan.

Aetna draws criticism for dropping Walgreens from its network of pharmacies for Medicaid patients in Illinois and the Chicago area.
The COVID-19 pandemic has increased our concern for the health and safety of people who are experiencing homelessness.
"Homelessness existed long before the pandemic, but in and of itself it's its own pandemic" Mr. Matthews
Escalating homelessness in Chicago forced city officials to act boldly to mitigate the spread of Covid-19. Hotel 166, located in one of the city's 'fanciest shopping districts', was then morphed into a homeless shelter. Director – Nic Davis Producer – Leah De Leon Commissioning editor – Anna P...
This evening, we will gather to remember and honor the lives of those who have passed away while experiencing homelessness over the past year. As we continue our fight against the COVID-19 crisis, we must not forget that housing continues to be a fundamental need and is what protects individuals from illness, violence, and death. Medical conditions often are untreated for many years because of the lack of accessible health care resulting in premature mortality. Addiction-related illnesses and drug overdoses are among the leading causes of death among individuals experiencing homelessness. Many of these deaths could have been prevented and let us all work together to build a community where no life is lost in homelessness. ~Executive Director, Richard Ducatenzeiler
Please join us this evening for the annual memorial, as we remember those we have lost this year and the gift they were to our community!

"Our world has really been turned upside down the last several months," said Richard Ducatenzeiler, executive director of Franciscan Outreach." We converted one of our three dormitories in the shelter where the outbreak occurred into an isolation space, temporarily moving guests into a school sports complex while we repurposed the space. "The strength of his...whom he called "front-line heroes," gives him the drive to "continue to do our work and work towards our mission, but yes it's been a tremendous challenge."

"Right now in the country, there's not one city that has enough shelter space for all the homeless people in their community," one advocate said.
"Social conditions often cause people experiencing homelessness to be especially vulnerable to catching COVID-19 and developing a severe infection, (Executive Director, Richard) Ducatenzeiler said."

"Until we are able to find a viable housing solution, it will be very hard to come up with any public health solutions," said Richard Ducatenzeiler, executive director of Franciscan Outreach.
We cannot do this work without the year-long support of our neighbors, community partners, and friends. We thank you for helping us serve warm meals, provide a safe shelter, and offer compassionate care to our guests.

As the season of giving continues, we are grateful for the warm Thanksgiving meal served by Rainbow PUSH Coalition at our Annex last week.
A special thank you to Shiller Preyar Jarard & Samuels and Westside Justice Center for making this happen, your support and belief in our mission means the world to us!
Today, on this day of gratitude, we reflect on the challenges we faced this year. The impact of COVID-19 continues to plague our communities, however, it has also unified us with a common goal: safeguarding the health and wellbeing of Chicago’s most vulnerable citizens.
While the news of an outbreak seems dire and we face a critical point in our mission, we know that with the support of our partners, our donors, and most importantly our incredible staff- we will emerge as an even stronger, more resilient organization.
Today on this day of gratitude, we thank our team. Your unwavering dedication and commitment to serve our guests amidst a pandemic is unparalleled. You answered the call when our shelters moved to operate 24/7, without hesitation you gave more, and for that, we are eternally grateful.
This Thanksgiving will be different for everyone, but we ask you to please remember our incredible team as we continue to provide a safe place to rest, a warm meal, and compassionate care to people who are facing homelessness.

A Chicago homeless shelter is grappling with an outbreak of COVID-19 cases, prompting concerns from advocates and organizations as the coronavirus surges nationwide.
We cannot do this work without you, thank you for your unwavering support and dedication to our mission.
Our very own, Director of Shelter Operations, Luwana Johnson was interviewed by WBEZ this week. "There will be a greater increase...Being homeless and not being able to follow CDC guidelines and to follow stay at home orders...can't keep themselves or others safe."
Homelessness in Chicago was already on the rise before the pandemic. Now, the city is preparing for a possible new wave as cold weather sets in.
Today we honor our Veterans, past and present, who have sacrificed so much to help safeguard our basic human rights.
Today we also remember that far too many U.S. Veterans are confronting homelessness, food insecurity, and are in need of vital services. In 2019 around 37,000 Veterans were homeless in the U.S., and 560 Veterans experienced homelessness here in Chicago.
Franciscan Outreach has always made it a priority to help our Veterans. Since January, we have assisted over 80 service members within our communities, and we will continue to be an ally, an advocate, and a champion for Veteran services. #VeteransDay #veterans
We are excited to report that last week, 41 guests of Franciscan Outreach participated in All Chicago's Accelerated Moving Event (AME) as a part of their Expedited Housing Initiative (EHI).
We are hopeful through this new initiative all participating guests will be matched to Rapid Re-housing units very soon!
Many thanks to our dear friend Chef Michael Airhart from Taste for The Homeless for making our guests a delicious, warm breakfast.
While the focus of the world has shifted elsewhere today, we know we can always count on Michael to be an advocate for individuals who are confronting homelessness and to be a beacon of hope for the entire community.
Michael, we are truly grateful for all you do!
Individuals experiencing homelessness have the Right to Vote!
2013 Illinois Bill of Rights for the Homeless Act states “A person experiencing homelessness has … the right to vote, register to vote, and receive documentation necessary to prove identity for voting without discrimination due to his or her housing status.”
In order to register to vote, you must bring two forms of identification, including one that shows proof of residence or a mailing address.
The Chicago Coalition for the Homeless has noted that “a homeless person can provide a letter from a drop-in center, shelter, or the person in whose home they are living doubled-up. The letter must confirm that the named person has permission to use their address for the purpose of registering to vote.”
Please use the template below to help make sure that everyone can exercise their right to vote and have their voice heard. #vote
“On behalf of the entire organization and the board of directors, it was my honor to present our staff at Franciscan Outreach with a plaque to our Frontline Heroes for their unwavering commitment, dedication, and compassion exhibited over the past several months. Our staff answered the call during a global pandemic and never hesitated to help some of our most vulnerable neighbors. We are eternally grateful to them and this plaque will hang proudly on the wall at our Harrison Street Shelter. Thank you to our Frontline Heroes!”
Executive Director, Richard Ducatenzeiler
Congratulations to the Chicago Homelessness and Health Response Group for Equity (CHHRGE) on receiving this year’s System Impact Award from All Chicago.
We are truly grateful for this group’s commitment and efforts towards containing the further spread of COVID-19 across our programs and communities.
From what began as a simple conversation between Franciscan Outreach and a medical team from RUSH University Medical Center on ways to contain the virus quickly expanded to include daily calls and a consortium of providers.
We would like to acknowledge some of our key medical partners RUSH, Lawndale Christian Health Center, and UI Health for their excellent provision of health care services to our guests.
We are so proud to be a part of this collaboration and its amazing effort; as it is a testament to what can be accomplished if we all work together.
It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of Philip Doran, a devoted and kindhearted board member of over 25 years. Phil always held true to our mission: he served compassionately and empowered others immensely. His commitment and unwavering dedication to Franciscan Outreach will be greatly missed, but we will continue to follow Phil's legacy of helping our most vulnerable neighbors. Our sincerest condolences to the Doran and Scanlan Families.
Last weekend, Franciscan Outreach participated in Chicago Police Department's 11th District Gospel Concert and Resource Fair. Our team provided information on essential services; ways to stay involved; distributed masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer. Additionally, our incredible team also offered 10-minute Naloxone training, which is a critical resource in the fight against opioid overdose and helping to save lives.
Franciscan Outreach sends a HUGE thank you to our friends at Dearborn Wholesale Grocers - Wholesale to the Public for donating 100 cases of Arnish Farm Raised Chicken to help provide our guests who are experiencing homelessness with healthy nutritious meals. Now more than ever - we need this support. Thank you!
Franciscan Outreach Celebrates Juneteenth!
Even with social distancing in place, our staff and guests are able to enjoy and celebrate this day with good food and fun!
Franciscan Outreach values the strong 30-year partnership we have with Rush University. During this COVID-19 crisis, they answered our call for help and stepped in to provide critical medical assistance for our extremely vulnerable guests.
A group of #RushMedicalCollege students, led by Assistant Professor Joseph Hennessy, MD set up a program to screen residents for #COVID19 at Franciscan Outreach homeless shelter. During their time with the residents students quickly recognized additional needs and went above and beyond to assist with finding primary care doctors, scheduling medical appointments and raising money and donations to obtain a supply of books for the shelter. CHHRGE is calling on the city to:
▪️ Shield high-risk individuals in apartments, funding at least 1,750 rental subsidies with supportive services, bridging to permanent solutions, allowing high-risk individuals to move from congregate settings into their own units and reduce the risk of infection.
▪️ Maintain the number of shelter beds that existed in Chicago pre-COVID, with additional space to social distance
▪️ Create a Chief Homelessness Officer within the Mayor’s office to coordinate a homelessness strategy across multiple departments in the City of Chicago.
