“A house is made of wood and beams, a home is made of love and dreams” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

As we observe Lent and prepare for the joy of Easter Sunday, please join us to celebrate the greatest gifts Franciscan Outreach can give – love and dreams!

One of our incredible case managers helped move three guests from our shelter to permanent housing this week. We are so grateful to her and our entire team’s commitment to helping our guests find a home! Truly an Easter blessing!

To help our guests as they transition from homelessness to housing, please consider donating much-needed household items from our Welcome Home Kits list: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1HDWV4VMEW5MZ?ref_=wl_fv_le

We are honored that Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot, Commissioner Brandie Knazze, CPPO, and team members from the Chicago Dept. of Family & Support Services (DFSS) visited Franciscan Outreach's Pilsen Navigation Center on Saturday. The Pilsen Center is unique as it is the city’s only low-barrier shelter. With minimal entry requirements for our guests and a focus on harm reduction, the low-barrier shelter model encourages individuals experiencing homelessness to seek resources by eliminating obstacles. Thank you, Chicago Mayor's Office, Mayor Lightfoot, DFSS, and the City of Chicago for supporting our work and mission! #ittakesavillage

In honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and every activist and movement for social change before and after him, Franciscan Outreach embraces our commitment to IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and access.)

Beyond our pledge within our organization, we hope and pray that our community will speak out against the injustices that sadly still exist today. #keepthedreamalive #inclusion #diversity #equity #access #MLKDay

This Thanksgiving, our guests received a little something extra from so many who care! The generosity was abundant! Pictured here, our friends at Snipes Chicago rolled up their truck and the crew delivered 300 prepared meals to Franciscan Outreach. The company states: “we are happy to give back to the communities that we serve.” Because of Snipes and other like-minded businesses and individuals, we are blessed!

As winter approaches, here’s how some organizations for homeless people are preparing

Franciscan Outreach is piloting a low-barrier shelter in Pilsen that does away with common shelter regulations, allowing people to bring partners or pets in. Ducatenzeiler sees this as a solution to providing more people with shelter in “unpredictable” Chicago winters where sudden temperature drops will lead more people to quickly seek shelter. But he added that it’s a model that “requires more funding and support.”

Ways to help include financial donations along with clothes and hygiene items — but people should also call nonprofits to ask because "oftentimes what’s needed is very specific," said Erin Ryan, of housing organization The Night Ministry.

"September 11. I will never forget feeling scared and vulnerable. I will never forget feeling the deep sad loss of so many lives. I will never forget the smell of the smoke that reached across the water and delivered a deep feeling of doom into my gut. I will never forget feeling the boosted sense of unity and pride. I will never forget seeing the courageous actions of so many men and women. I will never forget seeing people of all backgrounds working together in community. I will never forget seeing what hate can destroy. I will never forget seeing what love can heal." 9/11 survivor

On the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, while we remember those who died on this day in 2001, let us also honor those whose bravery, skills, and compassion allowed many to live. And may we always remember to choose love. #fridayblessing #chooselove #alwaysremember

Let’s Celebrate National Nonprofit Day!

Did you know?

· National Nonprofit Day started on August 17, 1894, when the United States Congress passed the Tariff Act that allowed charitable organizations to be tax-exempt.

· There are now over a million not for profits in the US.

· Nonprofits range in size from small grassroots charities to large organizations with far-reaching networks.

· Nonprofits have a wide array of missions: equality; justice; the arts; religion; food insecurity; healthcare; social services; the environment; education; human and animal rights; disaster relief; social services – and more!

· IRS registered 501(c)(3) nonprofits rely solely on the generosity of individuals, government sources, and businesses to meet their financial needs.

We are grateful and truly touched by the extra kindness of our friends at Old St. Patrick's Church.

The parish not only answered our call for much-needed new underwear for the women we serve, but also sent along beautiful fresh roses with the donation!

This extra caring gesture is so very special and meaningful for our guests, filling them with the intangible feeling of hope, knowing that they have not been forgotten or overlooked. Thank you, Old Saint Pat’s, for being extraordinary supporters of Franciscan Outreach!

while the catholics are known for lots of charity and good deeds. the franciscan in chicago is a complete mockery to the faith. when i fu filed a civil rights complaint i was banned from services. it is easy to see how so many kids get violated by the faith. they keep the dirt covered up...the staff is a bunch of people who could not work anywhere else.. the supervisor tells that its a non profit not owned by anyone...they will bond in groups to protect the ways of civil rights crimes done to the very most vonerable in this town....how can so much good be seen and the civil crimes and grievences be covered up...
