September is Su***de Prevention Month.

Every year, over 48,000 people in the United States die by su***de. It’s the 10th leading cause of death, but it’s preventable. Knowing the warning signs and reaching out can make all the difference.

🔸 75% of people who die by su***de are male.
🔸 For every su***de, there are 25 attempts.
🔸 90% of those who die by su***de have a diagnosable mental health condition at the time of their death.

At Millennium Counseling Center, we are dedicated to breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and providing support to those in need. If you or someone you know is struggling, don’t hesitate to seek help. You are not alone.

If we find healthy ways to process our past, we are more open to the present moment.

Painful experiences don’t have to disrupt our sense of safety in the present moment. Finding ways to process painful experiences, whether through creative expression or working with a Brainspotting practitioner, can help redefine our own unique stories.

If you have any questions about Brainspotting or you would like to schedule a time to chat you can reach me at [email protected].

Traumatic events can lead to long term effects on a person’s mental health. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms can occur from a variety of life-threatening situations, such as violence, accidents, military service, etc. •

Those with PTSD are more susceptible to developing substance abuse issues down the road if issues go undiagnosed and untreated. •

As part of this month, join the conversation to educate others and offer support.

This month is National PTSD Awareness Month.

An individual can suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) if they experience a traumatic event that is difficult to process. The veteran community has a higher likelihood of developing PTSD with wartime exposure. Trauma and stress affects individuals differently so symptoms may vary for individuals with PTSD.

By raising awareness about PTSD, we hope to be a resource for those suffering.

As an infant and child, connection with a caregiver works as a mirror to inspire emotional attunement. A baby cries, and in response, the mother soothes.

The connection with another energetically sends the message, “I see You.” However, as we grow into adulthood, we are bombarded with many mixed messages related to connection, making it challenging to relearn this authentic primal connection with others. The cadence of our daily interactions and greetings are mostly robotic.

For example, “Hey, how are you?” is a common – often superficial — greeting.

But what would it be like if we walked around saying “Hey, on a scale of 1-10, how are you?”

This shift begins inward.

Connection sprouts from feeling our feelings. If we have trained ourselves to disconnect from our feelings and emotions, how can we genuinely connect with others?

When the brain is in a state of trauma — which activates a fight, flight, or freeze response — the prefrontal brain instinctively goes off-line.

This is important because that part of the brain helps us use language, executive thinking, imagination, ideas and learning to cognitively processes and makes sense of our lives.

Trauma state can inhibit cognitive processing. Instead, trauma prompts the brain to go into a self-protective state where the limbic lower brain takes over. This part of the brain is responsible for rapid unconscious thoughts, emotions, habits, avoidance of pain, and attachments.

If someone gets comforted after a traumatic event, they may have been unable to actually process being comforted because their brain was still operating in survival mode.
