Healthy Schools Campaign

Healthy Schools Campaign HSC, a nonprofit organization, works to ensure schools are healthier places for all children.

Healthy Schools Campaign (HSC) advocates for policies and practices that allow all students, teachers and staff to learn and work in a healthy school environment. HSC envisions a society in which:

- Every student, faculty and staff member, regardless of race or socioeconomic background, has equal access to a healthy school environment.

- Schools serve as leaders making the critical connection be

tween learning and health.

- Students have fewer risks of disease, lead healthier adult lives, act as stewards of the environment and achieve their highest potential.

School meals are the single most healthy source of nutrition for children. Yet even with the current nutrition standards that limit saturated fat in school meals, most children, on average, still consume more saturated fat than is recommended.

We oppose the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act. We urge Congress to say NO to whole milk in schools! Instead, focus on proven strategies to reduce milk waste in schools and support bills like the Universal School Meals Program Act.

The Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act (H.R. 1147) puts Big Dairy’s interests before the health of students. Health experts recommend against whole milk for kids due to higher saturated fat and increased risk of heart disease later in life. Tell Congress to choose kids’ health over industry pressur...

We have bittersweet news to share about a big transition at HSC. After almost 10 years of incredible leadership, Meg Kelly, HSC’s Space to Grow Director, will be leaving in January to become the director of the Illinois Coastal Management Program. Meg has been appointed by Governor Pritzker to lead this program, which is run by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Office of Water Resources. In her new role, Meg will work to support healthy ecosystems and protect natural resources and community resilience throughout Illinois’ Great Lakes coastal region.

This is an incredible honor for Meg, a wonderful reflection on Space to Grow’s importance as a climate resilience model, and a testament to Meg’s amazing work and dedication to relationship building at the school and community level as well as in the design, education and climate resilience fields. We look forward to working with Meg in her new role and wish her the best!

New guidance encourages states and school districts to bill for all covered health services provided to all Medicaid-enrolled students.

Join Healthy Schools Campaign Wednesday, Oct. 4, from 1 to 2 p.m. (CT), for a facilitated discussion with three Illinois school districts on their initial steps to improve and expand their Medicaid programs — and lessons other states can learn from Illinois’ experience.

School nurses, Medicaid coordinators and other school district employees will discuss:
- Initial steps taken to prepare for the expansion, including how school districts are handling staff training, medical necessity documentation and parental consent
- Challenges, opportunities and benefits of expansion
- Advice for other districts that are considering expanding Medicaid billing

We hope you can join us! All registrants will receive a webinar recording after the event.

Stronger school meal nutrition standards can save lives! A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that implementing nutrition standards that align with the 2020–2025 DGA for added sugars, sodium, and whole grains can save up to 10,600 lives from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer and over $19 billion in healthcare costs.

There's just 1 week left to submit comments to the U.S. Department of Education about a proposal to eliminate duplicate consent forms for schools to bill Medicaid. This is a huge funding issue that can affect school staffing. Learn more & add your support!

Photo by Allison Shelley for EDUimages In an effort to increase the funding schools receive for providing health-related services, the U.S. Department of Education is proposing to streamline billing permissions for students enrolled in Medicaid.

Our Story

Healthy Schools Campaign works to ensure that schools can provide students with healthy environments, nutritious food, health services and opportunities for physical activity. HSC has developed an effective model that is helping transform the school experience. Our approach is strategic, clear and comprehensive: We engage, we advocate and we build.

Engage Working with the community to make change.

We engage school stakeholders, including students, parents, teachers and principals, to provide them with knowledge and resources to make changes for health and wellness at the school level and to have a voice at the district, state and national levels.

For example, Parents United for Healthy Schools has engaged hundreds of parents in Chicago’s low-income communities of color to address health disparities, improve school wellness and create change for students across Chicago.
