The school semester is in full swing and concerns over student health and safety remain in the forefront for parents and caregivers. Drawing on both public health and CPS safety guidelines, Healthy Schools Campaign developed an essential resource to help parents and caregivers answer the questions: What is CPS policy and is my school taking the right steps to keep students safe from COVID? This resource is available in English and Spanish. Note: these resources are frequently updated. https://bit.ly/3iyH4r5

Yesterday, HSC and Openlands hosted a small volunteer group from Space to Grow funder/partner TIAA/Nuveen, a TIAA company. Together, we helped build raised edible garden beds and filled them with soil (26 bags!) at Arthur Ashe Elementary School in Chatham. These will be used by the school to plant and harvest fruits, veggies and herbs. We are grateful to the support from TIAA/Nuveen Investments and the partnership with Ashe school.

The State of Our Schools 2021

The recently released State of Our Schools report found that the U.S. is underinvesting in school buildings and grounds by $85 billion each year. Congress can act now to address these critical gaps in our funding towards school facilities that affect student health and safety.

The education portion of the Build Back Better act invests in repairing and modernizing crumbling and outdated school buildings, targeting schools with the greatest need. Contact your legislators to ask them to fund school facilities at $100B in the reconciliation bill. Students deserve safe and healthy school facilities.

Take action today! Congress is debating different versions of a plan to invest millions of dollars in infrastructure. We hear that it’s possible that schools will be excluded from the final deal. You can use this form to send a letter to your legislators telling them that school facilities and outdoor spaces must be an essential part of any infrastructure plan. https://healthyschoolscampaign.org/action-alerts/school-infrastructure/

Schools are an essential part of the healthcare system, and school closures caused many students to go without physical, mental and behavioral healthcare at a time when they needed it most. We are pleased to announce a new brief, which explains how state and federal policies can help “disaster-proof” schools and provide continuous delivery of #SchoolHealthServices during COVID and beyond. We explore funding and regulatory barriers, specific strategies like telehealth and modified Medicaid billing, look at how to streamline parental consent, and more. Please share! http://bit.ly/school-closures-health

Our Story

Healthy Schools Campaign works to ensure that schools can provide students with healthy environments, nutritious food, health services and opportunities for physical activity. HSC has developed an effective model that is helping transform the school experience. Our approach is strategic, clear and comprehensive: We engage, we advocate and we build.

Engage Working with the community to make change.

We engage school stakeholders, including students, parents, teachers and principals, to provide them with knowledge and resources to make changes for health and wellness at the school level and to have a voice at the district, state and national levels.

For example, Parents United for Healthy Schools has engaged hundreds of parents in Chicago’s low-income communities of color to address health disparities, improve school wellness and create change for students across Chicago.
