On Wednesday, July 20, the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center, DePaul University hosted the fifth annual University Pitch Madness Competition at DePaul's Lincoln Park Campus. Student startups from eight Midwest universities showcased their businesses and competed for a chance to win top prizes.
This year's participants include startups from DePaul, University of Chicago, Michigan State university, Illinois Institute of Technology University of Illinois System, University of Iowa, Marquette University, Washington University-St. Louis and Northwestern University. Event attendees then voted for their favorite startup from each institution.
Congrats to everyone for making this event a success!

We are deeply saddened to learn that DePaul alumni, Kevin and Irina McCarthy, were among the victims whose lives were taken in the Fourth of July parade shooting in Highland Park.
Kevin McCarthy, age 37, earned a Bachelor of Science in finance in 2011. His wife, Irina (Levberg) McCarthy, age 35, earned a Bachelor of Science in finance in 2009.

Congrats to Associate Professor Lisa Young on her appointment as director of the School of Hospitality Leadership at DePaul (DePaul Hospitality), effective today. In her new role, Lisa will oversee the school’s academic programs, industry outreach and centers, which include the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation Center for Student Development and Engagement.
DePaul has added six full-time clinicians dedicated to serving DePaul students' mental health needs in the newly renamed University Counseling and Psychological Services.

On Sunday, June 12, DePaul undergraduates celebrated at the Driehaus College of Business commencement ceremony at Wintrust Arena.
Mayra Del Real, who earned her Bachelor of Science in management, delivered the student commencement speech. “Today, let’s go out there and embrace our own timeline as we move through new opportunities, new challenges, and new adventures.” Del Real raised a son and worked at an auto dealership for nine years before starting college. She is the first in her family to earn a degree.
DePaul also presented Driehaus College of Business alumnus George L. Ruff, founder and principal of Trinity Hotel Investors LLC, with an honorary degree. “Being one of the first in my family to attend college, I realized that my DePaul education enabled me to accomplish things in my life that I could never dream of being able to do," he said.

On Thursday, May 19, the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center, DePaul University hosted the Sixth Annual Purpose Pitch Competition at 1871 Chicago. Each year, the competition spotlights purpose-driven business ideas that focus on doing good rather than the bottom line. This year, five Chicago-based entrepreneurs pitched their businesses in front of an audience of faculty, staff, students and community members.
Pete Wilkins, author of the book, "Purpose First Entrepreneur," served as keynote speaker. This year's finalists, who were awarded $10,000 in prize money which was provided by Kutchins, Robbins & Diamond, Ltd., included:

DePaul University alumnus Errol R. Halperin (BUS ’64, JD ’67), a retired partner and strategic advisor to the global business law firm DLA Piper, and his wife, Libby Halperin, made a major gift to the university at the end of last year to create a new business entrepreneurship program.
The Halperin Emerging Company Fund will give DePaul the capital to make equity investments in startups that show potential for growth and job creation.
