Chickaloon has responded to 2 structure fires in the last 3 days, which is very uncommon in our area. As we move into this cold spell please remember to practice safe heating practices and if something does happen in your home make sure you have a plan before something does happen.
1. IF YOU HAVE A FIRE OR EMERGENCY CALL 911. Please do not call your neighbors and friends first to report the fire, this just delays the fire department or EMS response.
2. If you do have a fire DO NOT GO BACK INSIDE. This not only endangers you, but others who might follow you back inside and the responders who may have to find you.
3. Check your wood stove pipe frequently and have it swept regularly
4. Making sure your heating appliances have the proper clearances around them. (Toyos, electric heaters, wood stoves, propane heaters, etc)
5. Have a preplanned escape plan for your family and a meeting place.
6. Make sure to have working smoke and CO alarms. (These do expire every 10 years and do have batteries that need to be replaced)
Chickaloon is an all volunteer based department. We are very thankful for our volunteers who not only took time away from their family and jobs, but were also willing to brave the 0° and 30-40mph winds the last couple days. It makes for a challenging response.
