GOATS TO START GRAZING IN THE CEDAR GROVE AREA OF BIDWELL PARK
CHICO, CA –– Goats are returning to Bidwell Park and will graze approximately 20 acres in the Cedar Grove and World of Trees area.
Paradise Grazing Co. will provide 350-400 goats, which potentially can graze approximately one acre per day. Grazing areas will be cordoned off with an electric fence and warning signs will be posted throughout for public safety. A herdsman and guard dogs will also be onsite 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Where possible, paths and trails will remain open to the public. Park users are requested to please not enter closed areas, to stay clear of and keep children and pets away from the electric fencing, and to not feed or disturb the goats and guard dogs.
Targeted goat grazing reduces vegetative fuels and wildfire risk by consuming dry grasses, brush, and invasive species. This effort in Cedar Grove is part of the City of Chico’s Vegetative Fuels Management Plan, supporting ecosystem health and public safety.

VEGETATION PILES TO BE BURNED AT THE SOUTH SIDE OF UPPER BIDWELL PARK

CHICO, CA ––The City of Chico Park Division, in partnership with the Chico Fire Department, Big Chico Creek Ecological Preserve and the California Conservation Corps (CCC) will conduct controlled burns of vegetation piles on the south side of Upper Bidwell Park between the South Rim Trail and Whispering Winds Lane. The pile burning will take place on Wednesday, March 4 and again on March 11-12. The burning will be delayed or rescheduled if weather or air quality conditions change.

The California Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF) enables the CCC to provide fire fuel reduction projects in partnership with high-risk wildfire communities. The CCC provides young adults with hands-on experience while reducing the threat of wildfire by removing dead, dying and overgrown vegetation. The work is being conducted to provide a strategic fuel break where vegetation is reduced to slow the spread of wildfire and provide firefighters with safe, more effective access during an emergency.

Although there may be minor smoke impacts, pile burning is extremely effective to reduce fire fuels created by excess vegetation. This project is part of ongoing fire fuels reduction efforts by the City of Chico under the Vegetative Fuels Management Plan.

City of Chico Hosts Fourth Community Workshop with Three-Day Open-House for Downtown Revitalization Project.

In an ongoing effort to prepare for critical infrastructure upgrades and reimagine how downtown streets and public spaces can evolve to meet current and future needs, the City of Chico is inviting residents, business owners, and community stakeholders to participate in a special three-day project event aimed at shaping the future of downtown Chico. The open-house style event will take place Monday, March 2nd through Wednesday, March 4th, from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM, at 441 Main Street. Community members are encouraged to drop in at any time that fits their schedule.

What: Downtown Chico Revitalization Project – Three-Day Open-House
Dates: Monday, March 2nd, through Wednesday, March 4th
Time: 2:00 PM – 7:00 PM each day
Location: 441 Main Street (2nd Floor), in Downtown Chico

Building on extensive community input gathered during workshops held in May, August, and December, this upcoming open-house event will share the leading design concepts and evaluation criteria for the Downtown Revitalization Project. The concepts reflect the priorities voiced by residents, business owners, and stakeholders, including accessibility, walkability, and connectivity, and are grounded in the City’s adopted General Plan, Active Transportation Plan, and Climate Action Plan. The event provides an opportunity for the public to review how community feedback and established City policies are shaping the future of downtown Chico.

“You spoke, and we listened,” said Brendan Ottoboni, Director of Public Works – Engineering. “This event is an opportunity for the community to see how their feedback shaped the direction of the project and to continue helping refine the vision for downtown.”
