โ€œCatalyst had a fundraising event at The Commons one night while I was working,โ€ Navae said, sharing what first drew her to volunteering with us.

โ€œIโ€™d heard of Catalyst before, but I never had the chance to talk to the amazing volunteers and employees that keep Catalyst running. That night I did, and they encouraged me to sign up to volunteer. Iโ€™m really grateful that I did.โ€

Navae, who is in the one-year accelerated Masterโ€™s program for Social Work at Chico State, has been an extremely valuable volunteer at our HAVEN shelter.

She jumps into every task with a positive attitude, including providing childcare for participants, deep cleaning, working special events, being a calming presence on crisis hotline calls, and welcoming new families into the shelter.

Navae has also been active in outreach and prevention work through tabling at many different local events, including the Esplanade House Health Fair, Resource and Engagement Fair for the Rural Reproductive Justice Alliance, and the Grill and Chill BBQ community event for disadvantaged and unhoused youth.

Navaeโ€™s favorite parts of volunteering are her daily interactions with shelter participants and helping them feel comfortable during their stay with us.

๐—™๐˜‚๐—ป ๐—™๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐˜€

๐Ÿ’œ Navae has two cats named Herbert and Renesme.

๐Ÿ’œ She loves any Mexican dish - especially tacos! - and says she can never pass up french fries.

๐Ÿ’œ Navae enjoys having dinner with her grandparents on Monday nights.

๐Ÿ’œ She loves spending time with friends, watching romantic comedy movies and baking chocolate chip cookies together.

๐Ÿ’œ One of her favorite traditions growing up was making fortune cookies for Valentineโ€™s Day with her mom and siblings. She would bring the homemade fortune cookies to school to pass out as valentines for her classmates. Navae continues this tradition every year by inviting friends over to make Valentineโ€™s Day fortune cookies.

Thank you, Navae! We're so grateful you're part of our team. ๐Ÿคฉ

Because of their generosity, a family in crisis has access to a full 30-day Emergency Shelter stay. This kind of stability creates space for survivors to begin healing and move forward with hope.

Kristy and Tom, your continued commitment to protecting families and uplifting survivors makes a lasting difference! ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ’œโœจ

Sometimes, the smallest moments (trust, laughter, connection) mean everything.

As a volunteer, youโ€™ll be trained to support individuals and families with care and empathy, creating safe spaces where healing can begin.

A few weeks ago, our team was deeply moved by a donation of items made in memory of Catalyst donor Jane Wanderer, who passed away in April 2026. We are grateful to Janeโ€™s daughter, Jennifer, for honoring her motherโ€™s legacy by giving back to the community Jane called home since the โ€™90s. Janeโ€™s impact and the lives she touched will not be forgotten. ๐Ÿ’œ

Today is the final day of our Pet Appreciation Month fundraiser with TrailBlazer Pet Supply. ๐Ÿพ

For survivors of domestic violence, pets are often more than companions. They are family, comfort, and a reason to keep going during some of the hardest moments of life.

One survivor shared:
โ€œHaving my dog with me at HAVEN has meant the world to me. The staff at Catalyst really worked hard for me to have her here with me. She is not only my pet, she is my family and I don't think I could have made it through this without her. They not only made me feel safe, they made sure she was safe and comfortable, too.โ€

Thank you to everyone who donated, shared, and supported this fundraiser throughout May. Your kindness helps survivors and their pets stay together while they heal.

Thereโ€™s still time to stop by any TrailBlazer Pet Supply location today and make a difference:

๐Ÿ“ East Ave: 1354 East Ave Suite S

At Catalyst, we see every day how important pets are during the healing process. They are family, comfort, protection, and unconditional love.

One former HAVEN resident shared:
โ€œI donโ€™t know where Iโ€™d have gone if I couldnโ€™t have brought my dog. Catalyst treated myself and my puppy dog like familyโ€ฆ Together, through Catalyst, we learned not all people are out to harm us.โ€

As Pet Appreciation Month wraps up, we want to say thank you to everyone who has supported survivors and their pets this month. We are so grateful to TrailBlazer Pet Supply for hosting a fundraiser all month long at all three of their locations. Thereโ€™s still time to stop by this weekend and help support survivors and the animals they love.

๐Ÿ“ Mangrove Ave: 752 Mangrove Ave
๐Ÿ“ East Ave: 1354 East Ave Suite S
๐Ÿ“ Meriam Park: 2275 Springfield Drive Suite #120

Thank you for helping create safety, healing, and hope for people and pets in our community. โค๏ธ

All jokes asideโ€ฆ if you love cats (or dogs!) as much as we do, help us out by visiting at any of their 3 locations before the end of the month! Theyโ€™re collecting donations to support survivors and the animals they love who stay at our shelter.

As we wrap up our series recognizing the incredible community partners who helped Chico Rotary transform the backyard at HAVEN, we want to give one final thank you to three businesses whose support quite literally helped bring color into this space: Knight's Paint Chico, Benjamin Moore, and The Wooster Brush Company. ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ

Projects like this take so many moving pieces, and this transformation simply would not have been possible without gallons of paint, quality supplies, and plenty of paint brushes in the hands of volunteers.

Thank you to ๐—ž๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐˜๐˜€ ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜ for helping make sure materials were available locally and for supporting a project centered around care and healing for survivors of domestic violence.

Thank you to ๐—•๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ท๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐— ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜† for contributing the paint that helped completely refresh and brighten the space.

And thank you to ๐—ช๐—ผ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—•๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ต ๐—–๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜† for donating the brushes and supplies that volunteers used throughout the project.

To everyone who donated materials, volunteered time, coordinated logistics, landscaped, painted, cleaned, repaired, and supported this project in any way: thank you. This truly was a community effort, and the impact will be felt every day by the families who call HAVEN home while rebuilding their lives.
