We had a fantastic time with the Chico State Basic Needs Project today (known for their Hungry Wildcat Food Pantry)! Basic Needs Director Leah Slem and Basic Needs Coordinator Katie Daywalker gathered an engaged group of Chico State students to come by and tour our Howard Slater Navigation Center and Torres Shelter.

They listened to a dense, rapid-fire amount of info about our programs and services and asked thoughtful questions--and the fall semester hasn't even started yet!

We have worked closely with Basic Needs since 2020 to assist Chico State students who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness and help them secure safe, affordable, sustainable, permanent housing.

They do incredible work and we are proud to share this community with them! Find out more: www.csuchico.edu/basic-needs/

Michele survived liver and kidney failure, but her life forever changed after her double transplant.

“Everything was great till I got sick, and then I had no money,” she said.

As she recovered, her income dramatically changed. She could no longer stand on her feet long hours at one of her jobs, in food service. One of her other employers, a facility where she had lived and worked, closed.

Michele was still recovering from her surgery, and she was now homeless.

“The last two years have been really, really hard,” she said. “I had accomplished a lot and then I lost everything. I never thought that would happen to me, ever.”

At True North, Michele moved into our Torres Shelter and began working with her case manager and one of our Housing Navigators, Chris.

“I wanted my own place, and I was going to keep fighting for it,” she said. “And Chris didn’t give up either. I said, ‘Whatever you can find, I’ll be grateful.’”

In her 55 years of life, Michele has never lived on her own. Today, she’s excited to finally be able to afford her own place. She said her health is doing great. She just settled into her apartment and she’s looking forward to continuing online schooling for medical billing.

Michele said she wants other community members who need help “not to feel ashamed” to ask for it or to stay at the Torres Shelter. “The people that stay here want change, want to change their life, want to get housing.”

“Everybody is great here at True North Housing Alliance—whatever you need, they’re right there to help with it, and they don’t treat you any different than the fellow staff members here. We’re all important.”

Thank you for supporting our programs so that we can help people like Michele. 💙 - truenorthbutte.org/donate

There are so many steps to take when you're trying to secure safe, stable housing after living without a home. Thankfully, we have team members who know how to walk our clients through all of it.

Meet Maricela, our Service Coordinator. Here's her why -- why she works at True North, and why our mission matters to her. 💙

"Its such a barrier to go through that whole process alone, it's very overwhelming, and to be that support for our guests and clients, it's very fulfilling."

Many of our team members are motivated to help others because they know what it's like to struggle with homelessness, with addiction, with mental health conditions. 🏞

Meet Mason, our Workforce Development Administrator of Hospitality. Here's his why -- why he works at True North, and why our mission matters to him. 💙

"I came from addiction and homelessness myself ... I enjoy working here and it also keeps me in check. It keeps me clean and sober and it's my way of giving back to the community."
