5/28 Update: The deceased victim from yesterday’s fatal traffic collision at Esplanade and Lassen has been identified as 63-year-old Tawny Christner of Clearlake Oaks.

Chico Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident, and we do not have any further details to release at this time. Anyone with information related to the collision is asked to contact the CPD Traffic Unit at (530) 897-4970.

At 1pm on May 27, 2026, Chico Police Officers were dispatched to a multiple vehicle collision at the intersection of E. Lassen Ave. and Esplanade. Fire and police personnel had just cleared the scene of an unrelated hazardous material investigation down the street and were still in the immediate area, and a CPD Patrol Sergeant was at a red light at the intersection and witnessed the collision. All responders immediately redeployed and began assessing the scene within less than a minute. They discovered 6 involved vehicles, including a transit bus with several passengers.

Chico Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team responded to the collision site to process the scene. Members of CPD’s UAS team provided assistance in generating an aerial map of the scene using 3-D mapping software. Based on preliminary information, Officers have determined the party at fault ran a red light at high speed and rear ended a vehicle stopped at the light. The force of the impact propelled that vehicle across the intersection and caused it to collide with several other vehicles stopped at the opposite red light.

The driver of the vehicle at fault was transported by EMS with major injuries. The vehicle which sustained the initial impact held two occupants. The passenger was declared deceased upon impact, and the driver was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Drivers of all involved vehicles stayed on scene and were cooperative with investigators. This investigation remains ongoing, and more information will be provided as it develops. The name of the victim will be released upon notification of next of kin.

Anyone with information related to this case is asked to contact the Chico Police Department Traffic Unit at (530) 897-4970 and reference case 26-3995.
