On August 24, 2026, at approximately 8:10 a.m., CHP Chico Area responded to a crash in the area of Durham Dayton Highway and Esquon Road. The collision was reported to be related to distracted driving.

Fortunately, there were no injuries. Drivers are reminded to remain focused on the roadway and avoid distractions while driving.

𝗘-𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗲 🚲⚡️

Earlier this week, one of our traffic officers stopped two juveniles, ages 12 and 13, riding electric motorcycles 35–40 MPH on the Esplanade near Shasta Elementary School. Both e-motos were impounded, and the juveniles were released to their parents.

One of the riders had been contacted by the same officer at a National Night Out event the evening before and specifically warned that riding his e-moto on public streets was illegal. He chose to do it again the very next day 🫥

𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘬 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘦-𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘴. 𝗔𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁, 𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴- 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀.

More importantly, these machines are dangerous. They are heavier, faster, and capable of causing far more serious injuries than a traditional bicycle. We don’t want to meet your child after a crash.

Please don’t wait for a tragedy to change course. If your child needs transportation, choose an option that’s both safe and legal.

So, to make it clear- Under California law, electric two-wheeled vehicles with fixed foot pegs instead of pedals (and/or have a motor over 750 watts) are off-highway vehicles and cannot be operated on public roadways. If you bought a motorcycle helmet for it, that’s probably your sign 😉

On July 29, 2026, at approximately 3:37 p.m., CHP Chico officers located and recovered a stolen vehicle near East 20th Street and Forest Avenue in Chico. The driver was arrested on charges related to possession of the stolen vehicle.

CHP Chico Area officers conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle code violation involving illegal window tint, which led to the arrest of a passenger who was found to be a convicted felon in possession of a loaded concealed firearm. Traffic enforcement is about more than just citations. It plays a critical role in keeping our communities safe. Every stop has the potential to prevent more serious crimes and remove dangerous weapons from our roadways.

Use caution on State Route 99 southbound south of State Route 32, due to a solo vehicle rollover crash. Expect emergency personnel in the area and possible traffic delays. Please slow down and move over if safe to do so.
