This month, four tribes will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Salmon Run, by making the over 340-mile journey from the mouth of the river on the California coast to the headwaters in southern Oregon... their efforts coincide with far-reaching political, scientific and conservation work by the Klamath, Karuk, Hoopa Valley and Yurok tribes, which together launched a massive and ultimately successful campaign to remove the four Klamath River dams.

Twenty years ago, tribal youth founded the Salmon Run to call for the removal of four dams along the Klamath River. This year’s run will coincide with work to demolish them.

Arizona, California and Nevada will reduce intake by 3 million acre-feet (3.7 billion cubic meters) through the end of 2026, an amount equal to 13% of their river allotment, under a deal brokered and announced by the Biden administration.

Seven U.S. states that depend on the overused Colorado River on Monday reached agreement to cut consumption and help save a river that provides drinking water for 40 million people and irrigation for some of the country's most bountiful farmland.

As the region recovers from the latest round of flooding rain to hit the state, officials are also preparing for the record historic snowpack on the Sierra Nevada to melt -- bringing with it the threat of additional flooding.

As the snowpack on the Sierra Nevada mountains melt, flooding in the Central Valley will remain a concern for weeks and months to come, experts say.

Guiding on the American with Friends of the River was one of the highlights of my career. Rafting the river is an amazing adventure and a great way to understand and share the complexity of rivers.

The rains have helped replenish reservoirs and snow has built up snowpack levels statewide to the highest they’ve been in decades but for a number of reasons, experts are still hesitant to say definitively that California’s drought is over.

Despite all the rain, experts are hesitant to say the drought is over.

Named for the historic quarry town of Sites, which will be submerged if the project is built, the proposed reservoir has been met with support and criticism but perhaps the biggest unknown is when it will be completed.

The Sites Reservoir — a $4.4 billion system to add dams and store more water to be sent south — is still years away from completion.

Due to the additional rainfall and snow, California's extreme drought designation was downgraded the week before to a moderate drought.

Don't miss this must-see performance, Chico! We're proud to partner with Chico Performances to celebrate the natural beauty of California.

"Treelogy is a celebration and a call to action to save California’s beloved and iconic trees. Inspired by California’s epic wildfires chronicled by The New York Times journalist John Branch (Soraya Executive and Artistic Director), Thor Steingraber, and Soraya artist-in-residence, Etienne Gara, have created a musical response to the fires and a tribute to these precious trees. Renowned composers Billy Childs, Steven Mackey, and Gabriella Smith—all with deep California roots of their own—have each composed original music for this three-part concert. This unprecedented, multi-disciplinary effort will emphasize the pride of our state and the memories of every family’s national park vacation."
