Please be advised that severe thunderstorms are in the forecast for this afternoon into the evening, bringing a slightly elevated risk for tornadic activity to our area.
As you prepare, please review these critical safety reminders with your household to ensure everyone stays safe during and after the storm:
⛈️ Lightning Safety
Remember the golden rule: When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors! If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Seek shelter immediately inside a sturdy, enclosed building or a hard-topped vehicle.
⚠️ Downed Power Lines: Your Guide to Safety
The aftermath of a severe storm can be incredibly dangerous. Never touch, go near, or drive over a downed power line. Always assume any downed line is live and deadly.
Knowing exactly which number to dial keeps our emergency lines open for life-threatening situations. Please save this information:
📞 Call 9-1-1 Immediately If:
A power line is across an occupied structure or house.
A person is trapped in a vehicle with a line over it.
There are sparks or an active fire resulting from downed lines.
A line has fallen into standing water or a flood zone.
Someone has made contact with a power line or suffered a severe injury.
☎️ Call Non-Emergency Dispatch at (413) 594-1639 If:
You see a downed line that is not touching anything.
There is a downed line on an unoccupied road or sidewalk.
Small storm debris, like a branch, is resting on a line.
You notice a traffic signal malfunction (e.g., a dark light).
