We had a visitor come by today to drop off a cell phone with a bulging battery on the backside of the phone. They were scared of the battery exploding, so we advised them to remove any personal items from the phone and allow the phones battery to die and refrain from plugging it back in. The individual returned the phone to us afterwards so we can use it as a teaching tool, so here it is!
It is hard to tell from pictures but the backside of this phone is about to separate from the phone due to a bulging internal battery. This phone, along with a vast majority of battery bearing devices these days, contain lithium ion batteries. When charging these lithium ion batteries, the batteries produce heat which heats up the internals of the phone along with the external and anything it comes into contact with. This causes the internal components of the batteries/device to begin to overheat and fail. As a result, fire could potentially start or ruin your device. With fire being such a common issue with damaged and prolonged charged batteries, we felt it was necessary to try and do some education on the matter. Everyone uses cell phones and rechargeable devices these days, so good, safe practices can make such a difference in reducing the risk lithium ion batteries can pose.
Here are some helpful tips we can all use on a day-to-day basis:
*DO NOT PUT YOUR CHARGING PHONE UNDER YOUR PILLOW!!
*Keep your device out in the open away from corners.
*When a device is fully charged remove the device from the charger.
These may seem silly and simple, but itโs the little things that can make such a difference! ๐๐
