Long before Smyth County was formed in 1832, the mountains surrounding Whitetop were part of a much older story.
The Whitetop Nation traces its roots to Indigenous families who lived throughout the Appalachian highlands, including the headwaters of the New River near Whitetop Mountain. Many researchers connect these communities to the Moneton (Moheton) people, documented in the 1600s as living in this region of Southwest Virginia.
In 1896, descendants of these Native families gathered near Whitetop Mountain and formally organized what became known as the Whitetop Nation under Chief Blevins.
Though not federally recognized, the Nation’s history reflects generations of families who have maintained cultural traditions, deep ties to the land, and a lasting presence in the mountains in and around Smyth County.
📍 The true story of Smyth County doesn’t begin in 1832—it stretches back centuries, rooted in the Indigenous people who first called this region home.

In June 1898, the railroad was the fastest and most efficient way to travel in Smyth County. A newspaper advertisement from Marion listed multiple daily trains heading north, west, and south, with scheduled departures as early as 9:28 a.m. and as late as the evening hours.
Passengers could board in Marion and purchase tickets to destinations across the country—including Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, Colorado, and even California—showing just how connected this small Appalachian town had become by rail.
At the time, Marion served as an important transportation hub for the region, with rail lines supporting both passenger travel and commerce throughout Southwest Virginia and beyond.
