Town Manager Brian Martin would like to thank the Chilhowie Public Works Department for an outstanding job as they undertake the final steps in a much needed infrastructure project.
Earlier this year, the Chilhowie Town Council authorized the staff to move forward with the project that has replaced the aging, and very leaky, section of our water system serving the Double D mobile home park. These lines were installed in the mid 1960s by a private developer before the area was even incorporated into the town limits.
Instead of contracting the job, Chilhowie’s Public Works Department tackled the job “in house” and work began in early July. At this point all of the main lines have been installed and the staff is completing the residential connections.
Public Works Director Tyler Keen says that this project will eliminate one of the most problematic areas of the town’s water system and greatly improve our water accountability. It also resulted in the installation of two new fire hydrants where there has previously been none, drastically improving safety for residents. Also, being able to complete this project with our own staff instead of a contractor resulted in a savings of well over $100,000.
This project is another example of how hard Chilhowie’s staff works to improve the lives of our residents and do our best to take care of our precious water supply, while also trying to be as responsible as possible with the funds paid by our tax paying citizens.
