Good Samaritan Network of Ross County

Good Samaritan Network of Ross County Feeding residents of Ross County since 1981
“So no one goes hungry.”

The Good Samaritan Network of Ross County was incorporated, circa 1981, by the Chillicothe Ministerial Association, as a non-profit, charitable organization. One of its purposes was to centralize and coordinate the distribution of food to needy persons and families of Ross County through a Food Pantry. Currently, the Food Pantry distributes only food after receipt of an approved Referral from (a)

certain member churches (b) designated county social services agencies or other groups with 501(c)(3) tax exemptions. This referral process is intended to reduce, as much as possible, an applicant’s use of multiple food sources (pantries) thus extending the available food to as wide a needy population as possible. Financial support for the Food Pantry comes from a number of sources, primarily member churches, personal and corporate donations, an occasional bequest, and from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grants. The Food Pantry relies heavily on the non-perishable food stocks of the Mid-Ohio Food Bank from which food can be ordered at a significantly reduced cost – a few cents per pound. Other sources of food are the numerous food drives conducted by community groups, churches, and other organizations, including surplus food donated by national and and local food chains. Donations of cash and “in-kind,” and non-perishable food are acknowledged by the Treasurer or by the Pantry Manager (non-perishable).

As more Ross County families struggle to keep food on the table, the need for community support has never been greater. The Good Samaritan Food Pantry now serves hundreds of households each month, providing groceries and essential items to residents facing hardship.

To meet this growing demand, the Good Samaritan Food Pantry is partnering with the Chillicothe-Ross Community Foundation to lead a countywide food drive from November 14th through December 14th. The effort will culminate in the Holiday Pops Spectacular with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, December 14th, at the Ohio University-Chillicothe Shoemaker Center. Concert attendees are invited to bring nonperishable food donations that evening to help restock the Pantry's shelves.

Local businesses, churches, schools, and civic organizations can participate by placing collection boxes and gathering nonperishable food items throughout the month. Those wishing to join can call or text Vonda Kern at (740) 701-2868 to register. The Community Foundation will provide signage and collection containers upon request. Donations can also be delivered directly to the Pantry at 255 N. Woodbridge Avenue in Chillicothe, Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, brought to the concert, or picked up by arrangement.

"The Good Samaritan Food Pantry is a lifeline for many local families," said Scott Graham, Executive Director of the Community Foundation. "When our community works together, we can make sure no one goes hungry."

Tickets for the Holiday Pops Spectacular are available on Eventbrite at https://tinyurl.com/ykvzbh72. The concert will celebrate the holiday spirit through music, generosity, and community partnership.

The American Red Cross and Schmidt’s Sausage House of Columbus Ohio are teaming up to make it a Friday the 13th to enjoy. There will be a Red Cross blood drive at the Red Cross chapter house at 181 N. Bridge St., across the alley from the Bridge St. Dairy Queen from 11 am until 5 pm. Also, the Schmidt’s Sausage House food truck will be in the Red Cross parking lot from 11:30 am until 6:30 pm. A portion of the food truck proceeds will benefit the Good Samaritan Food Network of Ross County, the largest food pantry in Ross County. So come help your fellow man by donating blood and enjoying the brats, Bahama Mamas, German potato salad, cream puffs, and other goodies to help feed the hungry of Ross County. See you there!
