Over the past two days, crews worked on an alternative form of drafting a water supply. Normally in drafting operations, hard suction hose is used; with either a low level or floating strainer. There are times though, that it’s not possible to get the apparatus close enough to the source. That’s where turbo drafting comes into play. With a turbo draft, we can draft from a water source without using hard suction. This allows us to setup up to 200’ from the source. By using a 2 1/2” hose line at a high psi setting, it creates a Venturi effect. This forces the water into the LDH (large diameter hose) that is fed back to the pumping apparatus. With this setup, water shuttle operations can continue. Although the psi being used to accomplish the task is high, the discharge to refill is considerably lower (see the image returning water to the dump tank). Yet if you look at the image with the ground monitor, it still yields a decent pressure to have it in operation. In rural firefighting, water access is a high commodity. Anything we can do to better our access to it, the better our overall operation runs.

Crews assisted the local adult education school’s Firefighter 2 class, with search and rescue in one of the old campus houses. Students performed great and lessons taught in the classroom were reinforced.

Although the weather may have been overcast, crews took the opportunity to work on relay pumping. Relay pumping is commonly used in rural areas. This is done to keep adequate pressure supplied to the main attack apparatus and the hand lines operating off of it.

Over the weekend, crews and community partners took part in a very informative rail car response class. This class provides information and the framework for rail car response mitigation. Ross county alone has at least 2 freight lines passing through; carrying multiple trains daily.
