Professional Fire Fighters of Station 44 - Chillum

This past Friday, A-Shift, was a ceremonious day for the personnel working at Station 844. After a long year of hard work, training, studying, and testing, Probationary Firefighter Ballantine became Firefighter Ballantine. FF Ballantine hosted a big celebratory dinner at the station, where his family, Battalion Chief 4, and the 44 A-Shift crew were all treated to a “Rookie Dinner” where everyone got to reflect on how far FF Ballantine has come since he started his career. The evening also included FF Ballantine receiving his official Firefighter helmet shield, as a token of the crew’s appreciation and recognition of his hard work.

Additionally, this was Lieutenant Keleti’s first Probationary Firefighter that she had under her supervision as a Lieutenant. She did a fantastic job overseeing his progression, and ensuring he met all necessary benchmarks throughout his training. LT Keleti also reached her 20 year anniversary within the PGFD earlier this summer. The crew of 44 A-Shift wanted to give her something to recognize her accomplishments, as well as show appreciation for how much she takes care of the crew and the station each day. She received a custom helmet shield with the Station 844 patch on it.

A great coordinated effort by units from Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department and Montgomery County Fire Rescue Department 1st Battalion brought this fire under control quickly on Friday morning.

We want to take a moment to thank the folks from Montgomery County Maryland – Fire & Rescue Service, especially those from The 1st Battalion (Station 702) and the second battalion (Stations 711 and 726) who covered our firehouse this past Friday. This allowed our on-duty personnel to pay our respects at the services for Lieutenant Demair Lloyd. Thank you for your support and dedication.

Yesterday morning/afternoon, personnel from Station 844 had the honor of attending the funeral services for Firefighter/Paramedic Demair Lloyd. During the services, FF/PM Lloyd was posthumously promoted to the rank of Firefighter/Medic Lieutenant, by Fire Chief Michaelides.

Our thought and prayers continue to go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of Lieutenant Lloyd. “Rest easy Lieutenant, we’ve got it from here.”

Tomorrow, the PGFD will conduct a “Final Ride” in honor of Firefighter/Paramedic Demair Lloyd at the conclusion of his funeral service. The funeral procession is expected to have traffic impacts along Route 202 from Upper Marlboro to the Outer Loop of 495 and I-95 North, along Powder Mill Rd and Route 1 into Laurel from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm. Motorists can expect to see a large concentration of emergency vehicles and are asked to exercise caution if operating a vehicle in the area at those times.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends, family, and the personnel assigned to Fire Station 41, while we all grieve the loss of a great Firefighter/Paramedic, and an even greater man.

Station 844 personnel are on the scene of a Hazardous Materials (Haz-Mat) incident at a nursing home on La Salle Road in Chillum. A vehicle drove into a liquid oxygen tank, which provided oxygen to the residents.

Haz-Mat technicians from Fire Station 41 - Calverton arrived and assessed the damage. Personnel determined a LOW threat level to responders, as well as the residents/staff of the nursing home.

Nursing home staff is currently coordinating transportation for all oxygen-dependent residents to alternative facilities until the oxygen tank on site is replaced.

Please use caution if driving in the area, and be mindful of possible road closures.

Fire Station 844 houses a Paramedic Engine (ALS), a Paramedic Ambulance (ALS), and an Ambulance (BLS). Between these three units, Fire Station 844 is consistently in the top 10 for busiest stations in Prince George's County. This is largely due to the high volume of EMS calls for service in Chillum and the surrounding areas.

This EMS Week, we thank our Firefighter/EMT’s and Firefighter/Paramedics who work hard to keep our citizens and visitors safe.

May 17-23, 2026, is National Emergency Medical Services Week. The PGFD is proud to recognize the outstanding EMS service provided by our members and the important role they play in saving lives and improving the outcome for patients after a medical emergency. In 2025, PGFD crews provided 171,347 unit responses to 120,082 calls for EMS service. Combined with all other calls for service, the PGFD responded to one call for service every three minutes.
