Chiloquin, Ore. – The Copperfield Fire remains 3,822 acres and has now reached 86 percent containment.

Mop-up operations continue to ensure the fire remains in its footprint. Much of the perimeter has been mopped in 200 feet. The work south of Corbell Butte, that lies in steep, rocky terrain, continues to be slow and tedious, reaching about 150 feet.

A cooling trend with increased humidity will continue today. Tomorrow’s forecast will include a chance of rain.

Level 1, 2 and 3 evacuations remain around the Copperfield Fire. Evacuation levels are determined by the Klamath County Sheriff's Office in conjunction with fire officials and agency administrators. Current evacuation areas and levels can be found at https://www.klamathcounty.org/300/Emergency-Management.
This will be the final update for the Copperfield Fire incident.

Oregon Department of Forestry’s Type 1 Incident Management Team will be departing tomorrow and handing the fire over to a local type 4 team. The team would like to thank the community for its support and hospitality during our stay. It has been a pleasure serving you.

COPPERFIELD FIRE DAILY UPDATE - 9/9/2024

Chiloquin, Ore. – Crews continued their progress in mop up and building containment. Work around structures continues, bringing the depth to 200 feet around homes and structures. With the difficult terrain on Corbell Butte making for slower work, there is still has some heat near the fire lines. The rest of the fire is at 75 to 100 feet deep. With this continued success, containment increased to 77%.

Today’s weather will continue the cooling temperatures, higher relative humidity and lighter winds. These conditions help crews to continue their mop up efforts and push deeper into the black areas around the fire perimeter. With the shifting winds, smoke has moved into the fire area.

As The Copperfield Fire begins to wind down, we wanted to share some acts of kindness that unfolded in the early morning hours on September 3rd.

While in fire camp at the Klamath County Fairgrounds, a firefighter found a small kitten under a truck in the parking lot. Later, on the same day, some firefighters found another kitten, wandering around in a parking area at fire camp in Chiloquin. Both kittens were taken to the fairgrounds where they were cared for while fire staff searched for a foster home to take them. The next morning, under the same truck, someone heard some small meowing and found two more kittens, nestled in the undercarriage. It was quickly determined that they were from the same litter and made the long trek from Salem to Chiloquin to Klamath Falls.

These young kittens still have their eyes closed, and a couple members from our unified teams were able to bring them to safety and keep them warm and fed until they were sent to their new foster home. The foster parent took the kittens to the vet and luckily, the vet knew of a momma cat at a local shelter that recently lost her litter. When the kittens met the momma, she welcomed them with open paws and began nursing. They will stay with her until they are ready to go to their new homes.

We are pleased to share that all four kittens are identified for adoption. Three of them will be by members of ODF Team 3. They will take them home after they are weaned from their mother.

COPPERFIELD FIRE UPDATE FOR 9-7-2024

Chiloquin, Ore. – Work done on the Copperfield Fire proved successful at holding containment through Red Flag warnings yesterday. During the night shift the IR flight detected a single hot spot which surfaced with the increase of wind. Night crews were able to focus efforts on the heat. Crews continued their success in expanding the perimeter depth of the fire in previously burned areas (black line) that are now cold and being mopped up. Containment increased to 57%.

Today’s weather calls for slightly cooler temperatures and lighter winds. The crews will take advantage of these conditions to continue their push deeper into the black areas around the fire perimeter. Focus will be on the west end, near Corbell Butte.
With the thunderstorms in the area yesterday some crews may be used for initial attack for any new fire starts from lightning. In addition, some crews will begin preparing for transition, demobing to be available for other new fires starts throughout the state.

Evacuation levels will continue to be evaluated with the increase of the fire containment. Evacuation levels are determined by the Klamath County Sheriff's Office in conjunction with fire officials and agency administrators. Current evacuation areas and levels can be found at
https://www.klamathcounty.org/300/Emergency-Management.
