The Chilton Police Department is reminding families about the city's juvenile curfew laws and city park closures between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. With the recent vandalism occurring in the parks, we ask residents to be more mindful of these ordinances with their children. Summer activities are in full force across the city and understanding the law can help teens avoid violations and stay safe while spending time with friends.

City of Chilton Ordinance Sec. 20-249. - Curfew.
(a) Curfew hours. No child 17 years of age or under shall loiter, idle or remain and no parent or guardian shall knowingly permit his child or ward of such age to loiter, idle or remain in or upon any of the streets, alleys or public places in the city between 10:00 p.m. on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 6:00 a.m. the next day or between 12:01 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
(b) Defenses. It shall not be a violation of this section for a child to be in a public place between the above hours if:
1️⃣The child is accompanied by his parents, guardian, or custodian;
2️⃣The child is participating in, going to or returning from lawful employment, a school-sanctioned activity, or religious event;
3️⃣The child is engaging in any activities protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution or article 1, sections 3 and 4 of the state constitution;
4️⃣The child is involved in an emergency involving the protection of a person or property from an imminent threat of serious bodily injury or substantial damage;
5️⃣The child is involved in any activity conducted by a nonprofit or governmental entity that provides recreation, education, training or other care under the supervision of one or more adults;
6️⃣The child is engaged in interstate or international travel from a location outside the state to another location outside the state;
7️⃣For purposes of this section, the term "remaining upon any street or alley" includes and encompasses the act of cruising (driving around with no immediate destination) whether or not the child is a passenger or driver of such vehicle.

Sec. 26-137. - Unlawful presence on school and other public grounds.
(a) Absent permission from an authorized representative, no person shall be present or about any park or other public grounds including school grounds in the city between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
