Severe storms are expected for us this afternoon and evening (4p - 6p) bringing damaging winds, large hail, and a brief tornado threat. Localized heavy rain and flooding could become an issue for areas where repeated rounds of thunderstorms occur. Severe weather is also possible for tomorrow.

On this day in Wisconsin ~ June 8, 1984

Shortly before 1:00 AM, the village of Barneveld was hit by a F5 tornado. A large amount of damage was done along the tornado's path with the most significant being in Barneveld; approximately 90 percent of the village was destroyed. A total of nine people were killed, and 200 were injured. The tornado moved quickly into Dane County and hit the Black Earth area around 1:07 AM. The path of the tornado was about 36 miles, and it was on the ground for almost one hour. An F5 tornado is the highest rating on the Fujita scale.

15 years ago today, and with only 17 minutes notice, 158 people lost their lives in Joplin, MO to a monstrous EF-5 tornado. Make sure you and your family have a way to become quickly alerted to approaching severe weather (i.e., weather radio).

Today is the 15-year anniversary of the Joplin, Missouri, EF5 tornado, the nation's deadliest in 64 years and record costliest. It wasn't the day's only tornado.
