🤔Did you know...
The indigenous people of North America "invented" corn, by selectively breeding grasses! The original corn was a grass called "teosinte"🌾. In the words of Pioneer Seed, "corn breeders practiced selective breeding techniques by saving seed from the plants that had desired traits and replanting the seeds for the next harvest season. Dramatic changes in plant appearance were quickly accomplished and what would be considered recognizable corn was widely present across the Americas by 2500 BCE."

Whenever you eat an ear of corn, say a word of thank-you to the indigenous people of North America from centuries past who saw potential in one weird grass! Yum! 🌽

Happy National Farmers Day!

One in every 10 people in Wisconsin has a job related to agriculture, making it an enormous part of our lives and culture. In Calumet county, I'm sure that number is even higher. In 2024, Wisconsin exported $3.97 billion in agricultural and food products to 151 countries; that makes our state a huge part of feeding the world. Those early mornings and late nights are important.

Whether you own your own farm, work on someone else's, haul, spread, chop, or just buy eggs from your neighbor, you are part of the agriculture industry. Thank you to all of you for your work!
