Quick add-on to this morning's Territorial Days rundown: we'll be closed Monday for Labor Day, so if you've got projects planned for the long weekend, this is the window to get supplies — we're open our regular hours today, tomorrow, and Sunday.

Between the parade, the carnival, and everything else going on, it's easy to let a supply run slip to "I'll get it Monday." This year, Monday's off the table for us — so swing by before then if there's anything on your list.

Chino Valley Territorial Days kicks off tomorrow — four days of parade, pancakes, a car show, fireworks, and pretty much the whole town in Memory Park. Here's the full lineup so you can plan your weekend:

Flood Watch's over, and today's the flip side — mostly sunny, breezy by afternoon (gusts near 30 mph), high near 83. After yesterday's soaking, this is your dry window.

Territorial Days kicks off Friday — three days from today — so if there's outdoor work you want done before the town fills up with visitors (mowing, patching a fence, fixing that gate that sticks), today and tomorrow are the easy days to do it. Once parade-route traffic starts Friday, it gets a lot less convenient.

A couple of quick post-storm checks worth doing today while things are dry: walk your drainage paths, look for anything the wind or rain moved yesterday, and check your gutters for debris runoff.

There's still a Flood Watch in effect for Chino Valley until midnight tonight — but so far today is a lot quieter than that sounds. Skies are mostly cloudy this morning, and the latest local read has just one small rain cell expected to move through around 2 PM, not the all-day soaking the early forecast called for.

Still, a watch like this exists for a reason, so it's worth a little "better safe than sorry" awareness rather than none at all:

1️⃣ If that afternoon cell brings any thunder, no harm in stepping inside for a few minutes.
2️⃣ Keep half an eye on washes and low spots if you're out this afternoon — even a short, heavy burst can fill them fast.
3️⃣ Gutters and drainage not checked yet this week? Still a good excuse to knock it out while it's dry.

Nothing about today looks dramatic right now, and skies clear out for good by tomorrow either way. We're open all day if you need anything. 🏡

Storms are the most likely they've been all week today — 40% chance, on and off through the day, with wind gusts up to 29 mph. After the hottest stretch we've had in a while, this is a real weather flip.

A few reminders for a windy, stormy Sunday:

1️⃣ Give lightning room — if you hear thunder, head inside.
2️⃣ Watch for wind-driven debris — gusts near 30 mph can move things you wouldn't expect.
3️⃣ Check on anything you secured yesterday — make sure it held.
4️⃣ Low spots and washes can fill fast — don't drive through moving water.

This week ran from an Extreme Heat Warning to a real storm system in about five days — about as clean an example of monsoon whiplash as we'll get. If today's storms leave anything behind, tomorrow morning is a good time to walk the property while it's still fresh.

This morning's post covered the storm-prep basics — here's the deeper dive on the one job that trips people up most: actually clearing the gutters (not just brushing debris off the top).

If you're doing it yourself this weekend, here's what makes the job go faster and safer:

🧤 Sturdy gloves — rubber or leather, for sharp edges and grime
🥽 Safety glasses — for debris and hose splash-back
🪜 Ladder stabilizer — rests on the roof instead of the gutter, so you're not putting weight on fragile aluminum
🥄 Gutter scoop — narrow and flexible, won't scratch the metal
🪣 Bucket with a ladder hook (or a tarp below) — keeps both hands free
🚿 Garden hose with a high-pressure nozzle — flushes fine debris and confirms downspouts are actually flowing
🔧 Plumber's snake or stiff wire — for clogs deep in the downspout that water pressure alone won't clear
🧱 Splash blocks or downspout extensions — directs water away from the foundation once it's flowing again

That last one's the step people skip — but it's what keeps a monsoon storm from turning into erosion or water pooling against the house.

Storm chances climb today — 30% through the afternoon, 40% overnight — with wind gusts up to 26 mph. After a week of extreme heat, this is a real shift, and it's worth taking seriously.

Storm-prep checklist for today:

1️⃣ Clear gutters and drainage paths — a week of dry heat means dust and debris have piled up.
2️⃣ Secure anything loose outside — patio furniture, tools, trash cans — wind is the real story today.
3️⃣ Check your roof and window seals — heat this intense can dry out and crack caulk, leaving gaps for water to get in.
4️⃣ Grab sand and sandbags if you're in a low spot — CAFMA offers them free at Chino Valley Station 61 (1133 W. Road 3 North), and at stations across the county. You fill and haul, they provide the bags and sand.
5️⃣ Keep flashlights and batteries handy in case wind or lightning knock out power.

Today's the last day of the Extreme Heat Warning — still hot at 95°, but it lifts by this evening, and overnight rain chances start climbing behind it. That's the shift we've been watching for all week.

It won't feel like it this afternoon, but the pattern is turning. By tomorrow, we're looking at real storm chances and building wind through the weekend.

Yesterday was the peak temperature for this week — Chino Valley hit a record 99°, breaking the mark set back in 1924. Today's still hot at 95°, but we're on a cooldown from here: 94° tomorrow, 89° Saturday, high 80s by Sunday.

The other shift: thunderstorm chances are showing up in the forecast starting today, building through the weekend. After a stretch of dry, record heat, that's a real change in pattern — this looks like the lead-in to another round of monsoon activity rather than a one-off shower.

If your AC or evaporative cooler ran nonstop through the last few days of record heat, now — while it's easing up rather than in the middle of it — is a smart time to check how it held up. A little attention now beats finding out it's struggling right when the next hot stretch or a storm knocks out power.
