🗳️ Understanding Florida’s Closed Primary Elections

Florida operates under a closed primary election system. This means voters must be registered with a political party in order to vote in that party’s primary election.

Here are a few important things to know:

✔️ Voters may update or change their party affiliation at any time, but changes must be made no later than 29 days before an election to participate in a party primary. Book closing is July 20, 2026 for the Primary Election on August 18, 2026.

✔️ Voters registered with no party affiliation (NPA) or a minor party can still vote in nonpartisan races, including judicial, school board, and municipal elections.

✔️ In certain situations called a Universal Primary Contest, if all candidates for an office belong to the same political party and the winner will face no opposition in the General Election, every registered voter may vote in that primary race, regardless of party affiliation.

The Washington County Supervisor of Elections Office is here to help with any questions about your voter registration or party affiliation.
