Our Shumaker great grandparents filed a homestead in the Little River area of Miami in 1900. Our grandmother Mona spent her early childhood here. In 1900, filing a homestead in Miami involved applying for up to 160 acres of public land, paying a fee of $10 to $18 and living on and cultivating the land for five years to gain title. Claimants could also commute the claim after six months by paying $1.25 per acre. Fruit companies were buying up land and planting pineapples. It's been a while since we've updated, but want to let you know the homestead in Chipley has been sold. A lovely family has already started massive improvements, making it less rundown looking. This Fb site will still be maintained for all those Shumakers who want to post. We'll keep it as a history of our people. Sending lots of love!
