Chisholm Police Department SRO School Resource Officer

09/21/2020

Hello,

My name is Officer Joel Urdahl of the Chisholm Police Department. I am excited to inform everyone that this last summer I was selected as the new School Resource Officer(SRO) for the Chisholm School District. I have been a police officer with the City of Chisholm for just over 8 years and this is my first time being the School Resource Officer. Although this is my first time as SRO, it is not my first time in the schools as I am a 2003 graduate from the Chisholm High School.

My office is located in the high school, but I also respond to the Vaughn-Steffensrud and Elementary Schools. While at the schools I will be preforming a variety of tasks, including enforcing laws, problem solving, assisting in providing students and parents with links to outside services, mentoring, being a positive role model and most importantly school safety.

Students and parents with any problems or concerns can contact me by stopping in my office at the high school, by calling my office at 218-254-5726 Ext. 3903 or by emailing me at [email protected]. I am looking forward to working with students, school staff and parents throughout the 2020/2021 school year.

It was brought to my attention that the Chisholm High School received a call, presumably yesterday, requesting that a student leave school early and to walk home. It was determined that the call was not from the student’s parent/family. I followed up with the parent of the student today and confirmed that this happened on October 9th 2015. Not in the last couple of days. The school as well as the Police Department handled the situation in October.
No student is allowed to leave the building under any circumstance, while school is in session, without permission from the principal’s office. Any time a student has a dental or doctor’s appointment or has an errand that takes him/her away from school and back, the student is to report to the office for the permission slip to leave and, upon returning must obtain a pass to return to class. If a student becomes ill during the day, he/she must report to the office prior to leaving school.
The incident that occurred in October was no different. A teacher’s assistant took the call and called the student to the office. When the student arrived at the office she was advised to call home to clarify the earlier call. That was when it was determined the original call was a “prank” call. The student was not in danger, as she was not allowed to leave the school prior to authorization from the proper person. The Chisholm School district as well as the Chisholm Police Department are monitoring the situation and have had no further “prank” calls.
I know the Chisholm School district shares my concern that the safety of the students in our buildings, is of the upmost importance and something we take very seriously!

If you have any questions about our procedures, please contact the HS Office.

For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Officer Bill Purdy. I have been a police officer with the City of Chisholm for 8 years and this summer was appointed to the position of School Resource Officer for the Chisholm School District. The end of July, I attended a weeklong training hosted by NASRO (National Association of School Resource Officers), which was excellent training with emphasis for a police officer in a new position as a SRO.
We are already part way through this school year and have been thrilled with the way the position as been accepted by both the student body as well as the faculty.
I was assigned an office in the high school and am based out of there. I also respond to the Chisholm Elementary School as well as the Vaughan Steffensrud School. I also encourage all parents and students to contact me with any concerns they may be having. I can be contacted by calling the high school main office, or my direct line at 254-1421. Or if you happen to be at the high school please stop in with your concerns.
I would like to thank the Chisholm School District as well as the Chisholm City Council for combining their resources and bringing this resource to their students, faculty and community. I look forward to the remainder of the 2015/2016 school year and hopefully many more to come.
