Whether it’s rain, sun, or snow, members are continually learning and sharpening their skills. Today, Past Chief J. House trained 12 members on drafting and rural water supply. These skills are critical to fighting fires in areas of our fire district without fire hydrants and limited sources of water.

If you want to become a Firefighter, EMT, or Driver, submit an application on our website at https://chittenangofire.org/ today. We are always in need of new volunteers!

Friendly reminder to residents that the statewide burn ban is in effect until May 14th. Today alone, the Chittenango Volunteer Fire Department responded to two back-to-back Outdoor Fires including one wind driven wildfire that burned over an acre of land.

As spring temperatures increase comes an increased fire danger. When temperatures warm and the past fall’s debris and leaves dry out, wildfires can start and spread easily, further fueled by winds and a lack of green vegetation.

Although the burn ban is in place, not all fires are prohibited. Backyard fire pits and campfires less than 3 feet in height and 4 feet in length, width, or diameter are allowed, as are small cooking fires. Only charcoal and dry, clean, untreated, or unpainted wood can be burned. Burning garbage or leaves is prohibited year-round in New York State.

Never leave these fires unattended and always have water and hand tools ready to control the fire if necessary. Always ensure the fire is cold to the touch or drown the fire with water to ensure all embers and coals are wet before leaving the area.

The more careful you are with fire, the better we can protect you and our community.

🔥 Training to be prepared for anything 🔥

This morning, 15 members focused on problem areas within our fire district and finding solutions for various scenarios. These areas have limited water availability and difficult access to the emergency scene. By consistently training and building our knowledge, we can be better prepared for any situation.

If you want to become a firefighter and serve your community, send us a message or fill out an application today at chittenangofire.org!

Another burst of extreme arctic air and wind this weekend (Feb. 7th - Feb. 8th) will bring dangerously cold wind chills. These wind chills, as low as 30 below zero, could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside. Keep pets indoors as much as possible.

Water conservation mandate has been lifted by OCWA! Thank you to OCWA for their efforts to repair the pipeline.

All water conservation alerts have now been lifted!

Today OCWA announced the end of voluntary conservation for customers affected by a break in a large diameter transmission main. The break was recently repaired with the installation of new replacement pipe.

The Eastern Reservoir, which serves the affected communities, has been refilled to normal levels and customers can now return to regular water usage.

Voluntary water conservation was in effect for the following municipalities:

• Town of DeWitt (including the Village of East Syracuse and customers served by the DeWitt Water system)
• Town of Manlius (including the Villages of Minoa, Fayetteville, and Manlius)
• Town of Pompey
• Town of Lenox (including the Village of Canastota)
• Town of Lincoln
• Town of Sullivan (including the Village of Chittenango)

OCWA sincerely thanks its customers, employees and municipal partners for their patience, understanding, and support during this significant challenge.

Although water conservation is voluntary, OCWA asks that customers be mindful of their consumption!

Although water conservation is voluntary, OCWA asks that customers be mindful of their consumption!

Voluntary Conservation now in effect!

Today, OCWA moved from mandatory conservation to voluntary conservation for customers affected by a break in a large diameter transmission main. The break was recently repaired with the installation of new replacement pipe.

The move to voluntary conservation comes after the new section of main was filled and pressurized. Water quality testing is continuing in the new main before flows are released into the system to ensure that the water meets required regulatory standards and is safe for customer use.

During the period of voluntary conservation, OCWA asks that customers be mindful of their consumption. Voluntary conservation will be in effect until the Eastern Reservoir, which serves the affected communities, is refilled to normal levels. This is expected to occur sometime later this week.

While voluntary conservation is in effect, we are requesting that car washes in the affected communities listed below operate up to a maximum of 10 hours per day.

Voluntary water conservation is in effect for the following municipalities:
• Town of DeWitt (including the Village of East Syracuse and customers served by the DeWitt Water system)
• Town of Manlius (including the Villages of Minoa, Fayetteville, and Manlius)
• Town of Pompey
• Town of Lenox (including the Village of Canastota)
• Town of Lincoln
• Town of Sullivan (including the Village of Chittenango)

The Authority appreciates the continued assistance of its customers and will provide updates on our website, Facebook and Instagram pages, and send to the media.
