We have a new employee!!

06/25/2025

The Smallwood Store hours have recently been updated for the summer months! We are busy getting things done around here in the slow season! Updating exhibits, cleaning in the corners and the endless job of dusting, etc etc etc! Hoping & praying for a quiet hurricane season!
We recently hosted another paranormal group, great folks and they have shared some of the footage so far! When people ask what makes this place haunted, it’s hard to pin point why or if! But I guess it’s better explained by what others find when they visit! Personally I don’t come over after closing time, not alone anyways and only as a last resort! I brought a new puppy home last year from vacation! This video is from his first visit to the store! We couldn’t make this up and we didn’t get the first half of the visit but he definitely was upset about something! The other videos and pics posted here are just a few examples. It seems we choose to forget a lot of the unexplained around here and just move on with business but every once in awhile you start taking inventory. And it’s a lot more stories and events than we have time for today! But here are a few, hope you enjoy them!

My rental is almost right on the waters edge and the photo here shows the view from my home. It is time stamped one hour before the water started to recede at exactly 3:43 pm. So it got higher but by then I wasn’t taking pics anymore! I was down stairs stacking valuables on top of the bed and pool table to save it. The rental has already had visitors stay and more checking in soon. The electrical and plumbing has all been gone thru and the water did not come in but it was a close one! My downstairs got a few inches and as always I cut the screens on my pool enclosure and let blow like the Seminole Wind!

Years ago a good friend, Chief James Billie, place a hatchet on the piling just like this one on the Chickee he built down by the waters edge in front of our home to protect it from the approaching storm. To split it and go around keeping the structure safe. This is the 3rd time it has done it’s job and made me a believer! Alway keep a hatch on hand!

So this place continues to amaze me! We officially add another hurricane to the list that brought water to inches of coming in the store making 7 since it was elevated in 1924-25. For the first time since I have been here the dock is intact every board and I attribute that to the islander who replaced it after Irma, Shane Daniels. We have internet as of yesterday and are open on weekends. The food truck and boat tours reopened soon after the storm but we still have a lot to clean up here on the island. We will be open other days during the week but please call first or worst case scenario have lunch at Boatwreck BarBQ and they will let you go in if we aren’t already open. It’s still a beautiful spot with a million dollar view! I anticipate reopening with regular hours by November 1st. Please help support the people who live in the lower lying areas as they were not as fortunate as this old building!
