It is that time of August that we have to deal with the sun dropping lower in the sky and darkening the sky sooner in the evening. Because of this, it creates way too much glare on the water. Due to this glare, we are not able to stay open until PM Rec's 8:30 pm normal closing time. All pools are required to abide by the following dphhs State of MT swimming pool regulation:
8.2.2 All public swimming pools must have the following sign in letters at least two inches high: "THE MAIN DRAINS MUST BE VISIBLE FROM ANY POINT AROUND THE POOL. ANYTHING ELSE REQUIRES THE MANAGEMENT TO CLOSE THE POOL".
This regulation is serious and is in place to prevent drownings in pools due to not being able to see the bottom of the pool and possible swimmers who are silent drowners who have slipped under the water without being noticed.
The excessive glare on the water blocks pool staff's ability to safely see the pool drains from all points around the pool and our ability to abide by the state regulation. Therefore, the last 3 night rec swims, we have needed to close at 8:00 pm. Last night we were really pushing it to be able to stay open until 8:00 pm. The last 2 night rec swims this week that run from 7-8:30 pm, Wednesday and Thursday, the pool's closing time will be from 7-8:00 pm, but that time might have to be moved earlier due to clarity conditions. Friday, Saturday and Sunday night rec swim time is 6-7:30 pm won't be affected. The last day of swimming on Monday the 18th, the pool closes for the season at 4:30 pm.
