Christiana Fire Company Statement Regarding Incident at
Christiana Road and Airport Road
Christiana, Delaware —
At approximately 7:20 p.m., Christiana Fire Company EMS units were dispatched to the area of Christiana Road and Airport Road for a medical assignment involving a male subject in the intersection and in active traffic.
Upon arrival, Christiana EMS personnel located a male subject who appeared to be agitated, confused, and in need of assistance. Due to the subject’s behavior and the immediate safety concerns in the roadway, EMS crews requested police assistance and an engine company to respond. Engine 12 arrived and assisted EMS personnel in locating the subject, who had begun traveling eastbound on Route 273 toward New Castle. As Engine 12 approached the area, the subject began striking the fire apparatus, jumping onto the vehicle, and hitting his head against the front of the engine.
The subject also made several attempts to enter the fire apparatus while the crew remained inside and took measures to prevent escalation. The crew of Engine 12 remained in place shutting down the roadway to protect the subject and attempted to avoid direct physical contact until the subject approached a female bystander who appeared to be attempting to assist him. The subject then picked up the female and forcefully slammed her to the ground, rendering her unconscious. When the crew from Engine 12 got to the woman, the subject had the bystander in a choke hold.
At that point, members of Engine 12 immediately intervened to prevent the subject from causing further harm to the woman, himself, or others in the area. The crew secured the male subject on the ground until additional assistance could arrive. This action was taken based on the immediate threat to the injured woman, the subject’s apparent altered mental state, and the dangerous proximity to Route 273, a high-speed roadway where serious and fatal pedestrian incidents have occurred.
Christiana Fire Company is aware that video of this incident may be circulating online. We understand that brief video clips rarely show the full circumstances surrounding rapidly evolving emergency scenes. Our Fire and EMS providers are trained to avoid physical confrontations whenever possible. However, there are rare moments when split-second decisions must be made to protect innocent members of the public, patients, responders, and others nearby.
This incident is an example of the unpredictable and dangerous situations that Fire and EMS personnel encounter while serving the community. Our crews responded to a medical emergency, attempted to protect themselves, and ultimately acted only when an uninvolved bystander was violently assaulted and faced the risk of further injury.
The Christiana Fire Company remains committed to protecting the public with professionalism, restraint, and compassion, even under the most difficult circumstances.
Further information regarding the investigation, the identity or condition of the subject, should be directed to the appropriate law enforcement agency.
