Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley – (LVNRV)

The Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley connects community members who want to strengthen their literacy skills with trained, volunteer tutors. We provide tutoring in both basic literacy (reading and writing) and English as a second language (conversational and basic English skills) to adults in the New River Valley. We also promote public awareness, cooperative partnerships, information sharing and referrals between literacy programs and communities.

We're three days into our Give Local NRV campaign to build dreams of literacy and thanks to your amazing support, Literacy NRV is officially in the Top 10 on the Early Giving Leadership Board! These Early Giving donations have put us ahead of the curve of meeting our goal and puts us in the running for additional grants and prizes!

Right now, every dollar up to $7,500 is being matched 1:1 so your gift will go even farther! $35 buys text books for a student and $250 covers an entire year of tutoring for a student, so no matter the amount, you are supplying a student with everything they need to reach their dreams!

Here at Literacy NRV, our students come to us with new goals and ambitions every single day. Whether it's learning to read their mail, pass the GED, get their driver's license, or read a pill bottle, our student and tutor pairs work diligently to reach their dreams and open the gateway to improved independence.

Last week, one of our students took an incredible leap and passed her citizenship test! She worked tirelessly with Ginny to learn everything she needed to know about American civics, history, reading, and writing; definitely not a small feat!

We so much admire your hard work, persistence and dedication to achieving your goal, Laura! With this accomplishment, so many doors are going to open for you.

Today, June 1st, marks the beginning of Early Giving for Give Local NRV! This is one of the most important fundraising events of the year and we are so grateful for your support.

Did you know that your gift—matched dollar for dollar—can spark life-changing progress:

🔨$35 – Provides a textbook for an adult literacy student
🔧$55 – Supports training and mentorship for a volunteer tutor
🔩$100 – Offers family literacy instruction for a parent and child
👷$150 – Gives a full GED scholarship to one motivated learner

Anne and Lauren spent a terrific evening promoting literacy programs and giving away books at Riverlawn Elementary’s Summer Literacy event! We love any opportunity to share our love of books, reading, and learning to students of all ages.

Plus, we learned something great: Our local libraries are offering very exciting summer reading programs! Stop by your library and find out how to participate. 📚☀️

Inspired by our neighbors at the Intellectual Disabilities Agency of the New River Valley and their beautiful display of plants and blossoms, we decided our office could also use some springtime cheer!

Our goal? To become the most colorful block in Christiansburg!

It's that time of year again...

Literacy NRV is so excited to participate in GiveLocalNRV, hosted by the Community Foundation of the New River Valley! This year, we're excited to roll up our sleeves, pick up some tools, and help our students build their dreams.

With a new emphasis on events and community outreach, we have high hopes that June will be a great month to help others climb the ladders of education and empowerment.

We had the most tea-riffic time celebrating our incredible volunteers yesterday! This tea party was held to honor all of their amazing contributions to the adult learners we serve. They are the heartbeat of our organization and we could not do half of what we do without them!
