Applications are also now open for The Local @414, the downtown Blacksburg retail incubator and community hub set to open in fall of 2026! The incubator will offer affordable retail storefront space and mentorship opportunities, and the first round of tenant applications are open through April 30th.

The statewide annual competition is hosted by the Virginia Manufacturers Association to spotlight manufacturing innovation across Virginia, and this year featured over 100 nominations across 11 categories, drawing in nearly 50,000 votes.

A FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) will open at the Montgomery Co. Government Center (755 Roanoke Street, Christiansburg) on Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, at 8 a.m. Disaster survivors can visit any DRC to receive assistance. Additional centers will be opening in the coming weeks throughout southwest Virginia. fema.gov/drc

The Virginia Department of Health in conjunction with the Montgomery County Health Department, and NRV Regional Water Authority Water System are advising residents to use boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking and cooking purposes as a safety precaution.

This precaution is necessary due to historic flooding on the New River creating challenging water quality conditions.

Yesterday, the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development approved a Region 2 project that will focus on cleanroom manufacturing for local engineering advancement in the New River Valley.

Congratulations to the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute!

“The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute has identified a critical need for cleanroom manufacturing spaces in Region 2 in order to retain start-ups and enable company growth in place,” said Spencer Marsh, chief scientific officer of the Tiny Cargo Company. “Many companies require GMP-level manufacturing to create sterile pharmaceutical products that are required for clinical trials but are not able to access these resources using currently existing region infrastructure, highlighting the potential to lose valuable businesses in 2024 if we do not address this lack of infrastructure."
