Congratulations to Lieutenant Nick Wright who was recently recognized during a Christiansburg Town Council meeting for his extraordinary performance, clinical excellence and unwavering dedication to patient advocacy during a recent structure fire.
Upon arrival, he was confronted with a rapidly evolving, high-risk environment and a pediatric patient suffering from life-threatening injuries. Without hesitation, Lieutenant Wright immediately entered the scene and removed the critically injured child from the porch of the residence, initiating lifesaving care under extreme conditions. His rapid assessment and decisive action directly altered the trajectory of this patient’s survival.
In coordination with additional Christiansburg EMS personnel, he managed multiple severely injured patients, prioritized interventions, and ensured rapid stabilization. He demonstrated exceptional clinical judgment in addressing airway concerns, managing burn-related complications, and coordinating immediate transport.
Upon arrival at the receiving facility, Lieutenant Wright’s commitment to patient care did not conclude with handoff. Recognizing the critical nature of the pediatric patient’s injuries and the need for definitive care at a regional burn center, he remained bedside to assist hospital staff with ongoing resuscitative efforts and clinical coordination. When it became evident that the patient required transfer to a regional burn center - and both helicopter and alternative transport agencies declined the transfer - Lieutenant Wright continued to advocate tirelessly for the patient.
Rather than accepting delay, he facilitated and coordinated the interfacility transport by a Christiansburg EMS ambulance, ensuring continuity of high-level care throughout the extended transfer.
His actions reflect exceptional courage under hazardous conditions, advanced clinical competence, and unwavering dedication to continuity of care from scene through definitive treatment.
Lieutenant Wright’s performance embodies the highest standards of Christiansburg EMS. His actions, along with other Christiansburg EMS and Christiansburg FD personnel, not only saved a life but also demonstrated the character, professionalism, and commitment to service that define this organization.
