Please prepare for the incoming winter weather this weekend. Regardless of the snow/sleet/freezing rain totals, this storm will have a significant impact on our area.

- Reduce or eliminate travel
- Retrieve necessary supplies for power outages
- Identify medical devices that require electricity (especially oxygen concentrators)
- Help your vulnerable neighbors

A high impact winter storm moves in Saturday afternoon, bringing snow/sleet/freezing rain through Monday morning. Heavy snow will fall along/north of US-460, up to a foot or more in the Shenandoah Valley, with 5-8" south of US-460 to the NC/VA state line and lighter amounts in NC. Sleet will mix in to the south, significantly cutting snow totals down to only a few inches in NC. Freezing rain will cause ice of around a quarter inch in the Piedmont, with a glaze to a tenth possible area-wide. Brutal cold moves in following the storm, keeping travel treacherous for early next week.

Shortly before midnight, Fire and EMS crews responded to a reported structure fire in the 1700 block of Alleghany Springs Rd.

First arriving personnel reported heavy fire showing from the roof. Firefighters conducted an interior fire attack and a search of the residence for any occupants. Fortunately, no one was home at the time of the fire. Crews were able to bring the fire under control in 20 minutes and remained on scene conducting salvage and overhaul.

Over the last three days, volunteers and career staff from Montgomery County and across the state trained to become heavy vehicle technicians.

This training focused on lifting and stabilizing large vehicles such as school buses and tractor trailers. While incidents like these are fairly rare, it is incredibly important to learn and understand the techniques associated with moving these types of vehicles.

We have several major roadways running through our county, and we always need to be prepared for anything.

A special thank you to the instructors from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs and Total Car Care & Towing for the personnel, equipment, and vehicles they provided.

Wind gusts up to 50 mph, especially at higher elevations. This, combined with relative humidity % values in the 20s, will provide favorable conditions for wildfires for most of the region. The gusty winds may also break tree branches and power lines.
