The sound of freedom was never so sweet as it is at the Veterans Home of California - Chula Vista, where two veteran residents and musicians who once played with the biggest of names still blow their own horns.

On this Korean War Memorial Day, we remember the more than 33,700 American military personnel who died fighting in Korea. Some 20,300 others died while serving during the Korean War Era.

The Korean War produced 146 Medal of Honor recipients. The names of 13 of them grace our Medal of Honor Hall at CalVet headquarters in downtown Sacramento. Six of those 13 died in battle, their medals presented posthumously to family members.

Today, June 6, 2024, marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

We honor the heroism and sacrifices of all those who served as part of the 1944 invasion of Normandy, which laid the foundation for Allied victory on the Western Front in World War II.

On this Memorial Day, we honor those who made the supreme sacrifice in service to our nation. We remember the fallen by supporting the living veterans with whom they served and fought alongside as comrades, brothers, and sisters in arms.

There often is confusion about the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day, which is celebrated on the last Monday in May, honors those U.S. servicemembers who have died in military service to the nation. Veterans Day, which falls on November 11, honors the millions of men and women who have served in the U.S. military.

As part of National Volunteer Week, we share this CalVet Connect story of how a Veterans Home of California - Chula Vista volunteer brought a Grinch-like veteran out of his anti-holiday mood.

Several winters ago, Lois Cornish says she met a real Grinch: a notoriously cantankerous veteran who lived at the Veterans Home of California-Chula Vista. In our ongoing “Volunteers Serving Veteran…

Welcome to the Chula Vista Veterans Home

Located on a 30-acre site off Telegraph Canyon Road, adjacent to Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, the Veterans Home of California, Chula Vista (VHC-Chula Vista), is the only veterans home located in coastal, urban Southern California. With views of the Pacific Ocean and downtown San Diego, VHC-Chula Vista’s location provides residents with numerous cultural and recreational opportunities.

VHC-Chula Vista is a 305-bed long-term care facility providing options for Licensed Residential, and Skilled Nursing Care. Acute care is provided at either the La Jolla U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, or at the nearby Sharp Hospital in Chula Vista.

Veterans desiring to be considered for membership must be residents of California, age 55 or older (or younger if disabled), and have served honorably.
