On Friday August 28, 2026, I Chief Thibodeaux was honored to have been asked and able to perform Active Shooter Training to Hearts of Hope in Lafayette. This is the second time i have been asked to give them this training and I am beyond honored. These people at Hearts of Hope are extraordinary people and have worked with them on many cases where sexual assault on children victims have been interviewed by them. They are very well trained at their profession and are amazing with the children. Thank you again for allowing me to give your continuing education in Civilian Response to Active Shooter Education.

Well said sir

“Once again, our community is left asking why. Why are lives being cut short? Why are disagreements being settled with a trigger instead of a conversation? And why has senseless gun violence become something we are forced to address far too often?

Let me be clear: the responsibility for pulling the trigger belongs to the person who chooses to pull it. While law enforcement will always examine our own actions, remain accountable to the public, and work tirelessly to improve the safety of our communities, we cannot allow those who commit violent crimes to escape personal responsibility by immediately shifting blame to the police.

It is easy to point fingers after tragedy strikes. It is much harder to acknowledge the real problem—the individuals who make the conscious decision to pick up a gun and use it to harm another human being.

Our officers did not create the violence. They are the ones responding when the shots are fired. They run toward danger while others are running away. They comfort victims, notify families, collect evidence, and work countless hours to identify and arrest those responsible.

Accountability must apply to everyone. If law enforcement makes a mistake, we should be held accountable. But those who commit acts of violence must also be held accountable for their choices. We cannot build a safer community if every act of violence is immediately blamed on someone other than the person responsible for committing it.

Gun violence is not a police problem alone—it is a community problem that requires all of us to work together. We need parents, families, schools, churches, community leaders, and citizens to stand with us, speak up, and refuse to accept violence as normal.

Enough excuses. Enough finger-pointing. Enough lives lost.

Our community deserves better, and we will continue doing everything in our power to protect the innocent, pursue those who commit violent crimes, and work alongside our community toward a safer future.”

My prayers are with all affected by this senseless act of violence.

School Safety Concerns

With school starting we are once again asking parents to be cautious when picking up you children. If you are picking up from Church Point Elementary, please come from either north street or Guidry St or Darbonne St to go line up in the pickup lines behind the elementary. Please avoid Lougarre as traffic is already congested there and is only one lane. Also, if the lines are backed up to Wimberly Street and you must stop on Wimberly St to wait to turn in Please stay on one side of the roadway and pull off the roadway as much as possible.

If you are picking up Church Point High School Students once cars have reached back to the Main St on Lougarre please go and begin to line up on Guidry St and McMillian St and please do not block any driveways and pull as far as you can off the roadway. Do not stop on South Main St waiting to turn onto Lougarre St as this is a main highway and cannot be obstructed at any time. Also, you may not park on the side of the highway waiting for the line to move. This is being done for safety reasons and to prevent serious accidents so please abide by these rules.

When going to Church Point Middle School once the parking area is full and you must park on the roadway waiting to turn in please stay to one side of the roadway and also stay as far off the roadway as possible as to not obstruct traffic and busses going in and out.

The HeadStart on N Main St will be back in session also and we are reminding the public that it is a school zone and to follow the proper speed during school zone hours which are posted. This is for the safety of the children parents and school buses.

Anyone not abiding by these requirements may receive a citation.

Our Beat the Heat event was a huge success yesterday. I want to thank all our officers who participated and mingled with the kids. This is what it’s all about interacting with the community and especially the kids who most of the time only meet the police in negative situations. I especially want to thank Major Minix and Officer Hazel for spearheading and getting things coordinated to put on this event. We have many sponsors to thank and volunteers that will be posted in a seperate post this week. And i especially want to thank everyone who came by and participated and supported our event. This is what it’s all about giving back to the kids and the community.
