Wilkins Elementary STEAM Academy

Wilkins Elementary STEAM Academy Welcome to Wilkins STEAM Academy, serving grades Pre-K through 5 as part of the Woodland Hills School District in Pennsylvania.

Wilkins staff will maintain high expectations for every student and will provide relevant, engaging instruction and intervention based on the data analysis of individual needs to ensure that there is measurable growth in math and reading achievement. Wilkins will create a safe, welcoming environment and build parent relationships to ensure the positive experience of students who will know that the

school and the family share a common interest in their education and welfare. The Woodland Hills School District was formed in July, 1981, and is located in the eastern portion of Allegheny County, approximately eight miles east of the City of Pittsburgh. The school district covers 13-1/2 square miles and includes the communities of Braddock, Braddock Hills, Chalfant, Churchill, East Pittsburgh, Edgewood, Forest Hills, North Braddock, Rankin, Swissvale, Turtle Creek and Wilkins Township. The school district is part of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit. Geographically, Woodland Hills is bounded by the Monongahela River on the south and the City of Pittsburgh to the west. The Penn-Lincoln Parkway passes through the northern portion of the school district and supplies easy access to downtown Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Route 30 is a major east-west traffic artery which passes through the center of the school district. The entire area is served by the Port Authority of Allegheny County, which provides bus transportation to surrounding areas as well as within the school district community. Although composed of 12 municipalities, the school district is a comprehensive community that can provide for a variety of individual needs in housing, employment and social activities. There are over 21,000 residences located within the school district boundaries. The district is primarily a residential community and many residents look to the metropolitan Pittsburgh area for employment, entertainment and social activities. The close proximity of the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University also provide residents with access to numerous educational and cultural activities. The district serves approximately 3,500 students yearly, providing them with a wide array of education and extra-curricular opportunities to develop academically, athletically and socially. Woodland Hills is dedicated to excellence in the classroom, with the primary emphasis placed on quality instruction and student achievement. Additionally, the district is committed to developing community support and citizen involvement within the district.

Today was the beginner band concert. This is the first time many of our students have performed for an audience. It’s a fantastic step forward for these students as they continue to work on the fundamentals of music and as they continue to grasp the key concepts of playing their various instruments.

If you missed the concert or would like to see it again, please check out our archived stream below.

Our Reading Champions had an amazing time at the Penguins game on Tuesday! This was a fantastic way for our third graders to celebrate the incredible work they've done to read as much as possible throughout the school year. The tickets were provided by the Penguins through their Reading Champions program with U.S. Steel. Third grade students who participated in the program and who met certain criteria were eligible to attend along with an adult.

A few ended up on the scoreboard video screen! Iceburgh stopped by to celebrate with them, too.

But the biggest thrill was Ms. Catone's class being presented the Penguins' Reading Champions Steel Cup! Her class read 78,345 minutes through the Reading Champions program this year, the most of any classroom in the program! Her class was able to see the Steel Cup in person, which includes an engraving recognizing their achievement and each of their names!

We'll have much more about the Steel Cup and her class in the near future. Congratulations to all of our third grade readers!

Wilkins sure has a lot of champions in the third grade!

The third grade classrooms once again have been taking part in the Reading Champions program sponsored by the Pittsburgh Penguins and U.S. Steel. Students are challenged to read as much as possible throughout the year and track the number of minutes they read each day. The goal is to read at least 20 minutes a day over eight weeks.

As part of the program, participating classrooms receive books and resources to help with the challenge.

Well, the third graders did so well that students from multiple classrooms officially received MVP status! To celebrate, the Penguins, U.S. Steel, and Iceburgh made a visit on Thursday, March 19 to applaud the students for their hard work.

In recognition of their achievement, each eligible third grader received a goodie bag with some cool stuff and two tickets to the Penguins game on March 24!

Congratulations to our Reading Champions!
